Egypt's Defeat at Carchemish
1 The Lord spoke to me about the nations, 2 beginning with Egypt. This is what he said about the army of King Neco of Egypt, which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia defeated at Carchemish near the Euphrates River in the fourth year that Jehoiakim was king of Judah:
3 “The Egyptian officers shout,
‘Get your shields ready
and march into battle!
4 Harness your horses and mount them!
Fall in line and put on your helmets!
Sharpen your spears!
Put on your armor!’
5 “But what do I see?” asks the Lord.
“They are turning back in terror.
Their soldiers are beaten back;
overcome with fear, they run as fast as they can
and do not look back.
6 Those who run fast cannot get away;
the soldiers cannot escape.
In the north, by the Euphrates,
they stumble and fall.
7 Who is this that rises like the Nile,
like a river flooding its banks?
8 It is Egypt, rising like the Nile,
like a river flooding its banks.
Egypt said, ‘I will rise and cover the world;
I will destroy cities and the people who live there.
9 Command the horses to go
and the chariots to roll!
Send out the soldiers:
men from Ethiopia and Libya, carrying shields,
and skilled archers from Lydia.’”
10 This is the day of the Sovereign Lord Almighty:
today he will take revenge;
today he will punish his enemies.
His sword will eat them until it is full,
and drink their blood until it is satisfied.
Today the Almighty sacrifices his victims
in the north, by the Euphrates.
11 People of Egypt, go to Gilead
and look for medicine!
All your medicine has proved useless;
nothing can heal you.
12 Nations have heard of your shame;
everyone has heard you cry.
One soldier trips over another,
and both of them fall to the ground.
The Coming of Nebuchadnezzar
13 When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia came to attack Egypt, the Lord spoke to me. He said,
14 “Proclaim it in the towns of Egypt,
in Migdol, Memphis, and Tahpanhes:
‘Get ready to defend yourselves;
all you have will be destroyed in war!
15 Why has your mighty god Apis fallen?
The Lord has struck him down!’
16 Your soldiers have stumbled and fallen;
each one says to the other,
‘Hurry! Let's go home to our people
and escape the enemy's sword!’
17 “Give the king of Egypt a new name—
‘Noisy Braggart Who Missed His Chance.’
18 I, the Lord Almighty, am king.
I am the living God.
As Mount Tabor towers above the mountains
and Mount Carmel stands high above the sea,
so will be the strength of the one who attacks you.
19 Get ready to be taken prisoner,
you people of Egypt!
Memphis will be made a desert,
a ruin where no one lives.
20 Egypt is like a splendid cow,
attacked by a stinging fly from the north.
21 Even her hired soldiers
are helpless as calves.
They did not stand and fight;
all of them turned and ran.
The day of their doom had arrived,
the time of their destruction.
22 Egypt runs away, hissing like a snake,
as the enemy's army approaches.
They attack her with axes,
like people cutting down trees
23 and destroying a thick forest.
Their soldiers are too many to count;
they outnumber the locusts.
24 The people of Egypt are put to shame;
they are conquered by the people of the north.
I, the Lord, have spoken.”
25 The Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says, “I am going to punish Amon, the god of Thebes, together with Egypt and its gods and kings. I am going to take the king of Egypt and all who put their trust in him, 26 and hand them over to those who want to kill them, to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia and his army. But later on, people will live in Egypt again, as they did in times past. I, the Lord, have spoken.
The Lord Will Save His People
27 “My people, do not be afraid,
people of Israel, do not be terrified.
I will rescue you from that faraway land,
from the land where you are prisoners.
You will come back home and live in peace;
you will be secure, and no one will make you afraid.
28 I will come to you and save you.
I will destroy all the nations
where I have scattered you,
but I will not destroy you.
I will not let you go unpunished;
but when I punish you, I will be fair.
I, the Lord, have spoken.”
Prophétie contre l’Égypte
V. 1-12: cf. (2 Ch 35:20. 2 R 23:29-35; 24:7.) És 8:9, 10.1 La parole de l’Éternel qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, sur les nations. 2 Sur l’Égypte. Sur l’armée de Pharaon Neco, roi d’Égypte, qui était près du fleuve de l’Euphrate, à Carkemisch, et qui fut battue par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, la quatrième année de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda.
3 Préparez le petit et le grand bouclier,
Et marchez au combat!
4 Attelez les chevaux,
Montez, cavaliers!
Paraissez avec vos casques,
Polissez vos lances,
Revêtez la cuirasse!…
5 Que vois-je? Ils ont peur, ils reculent;
Leurs vaillants hommes sont battus;
Ils fuient sans se retourner…
L’épouvante est de toutes parts, dit l’Éternel.
6 Que le plus léger ne trouve aucun salut dans la fuite,
Que le plus vaillant n’échappe pas!
Au septentrion, sur les rives de l’Euphrate,
Ils chancellent, ils tombent.
7 Qui est celui qui s’avance comme le Nil,
Et dont les eaux sont agitées comme les torrents?
8 C’est l’Égypte. Elle s’avance comme le Nil,
Et ses eaux sont agitées comme les torrents.
Elle dit: Je monterai, je couvrirai la terre,
Je détruirai les villes et leurs habitants.
9 Montez, chevaux! Précipitez-vous, chars!
Qu’ils se montrent, les vaillants hommes,
Ceux d’Éthiopie et de Puth qui portent le bouclier,
Et ceux de Lud qui manient et tendent l’arc!
10 Ce jour est au Seigneur, à l’Éternel des armées;
C’est un jour de vengeance, où il se venge de ses ennemis.
L’épée dévore, elle se rassasie,
Elle s’enivre de leur sang.
Car il y a des victimes du Seigneur, de l’Éternel des armées,
Au pays du septentrion, sur les rives de l’Euphrate.
11 Monte en Galaad, prends du baume,
Vierge, fille de l’Égypte!
En vain tu multiplies les remèdes,
Il n’y a point de guérison pour toi.
12 Les nations apprennent ta honte,
Et tes cris remplissent la terre,
Car les guerriers chancellent l’un sur l’autre,
Ils tombent tous ensemble.
V. 13-28: cf. Jé 43:8-13. Éz 29 à 32.13 La parole qui fut adressée par l’Éternel à Jérémie, le prophète, sur l’arrivée de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, qui voulait frapper le pays d’Égypte.
14 Annoncez-le en Égypte,
Publiez-le à Migdol,
Publiez-le à Noph et à Tachpanès!
Dites: Lève-toi, prépare-toi,
Car l’épée dévore autour de toi!
15 Pourquoi tes vaillants hommes sont-ils emportés?
Ils ne tiennent pas ferme, car l’Éternel les renverse.
16 Il en fait chanceler un grand nombre;
Ils tombent l’un sur l’autre, et ils disent:
Allons, retournons vers notre peuple,
Dans notre pays natal,
Loin du glaive destructeur!
17 Là, on s’écrie: Pharaon, roi d’Égypte,
Ce n’est qu’un bruit; il a laissé passer le moment.
18 Je suis vivant! Dit le roi,
Dont l’Éternel des armées est le nom,
Comme le Thabor parmi les montagnes,
Comme le Carmel qui s’avance dans la mer, il viendra.
19 Fais ton bagage pour la captivité,
Habitante, fille de l’Egypte!
Car Noph deviendra un désert,
Elle sera ravagée, elle n’aura plus d’habitants.
20 L’Égypte est une très belle génisse…
Le destructeur vient du septentrion, il arrive…
21 Ses mercenaires aussi sont au milieu d’elle comme des veaux engraissés.
Et eux aussi, ils tournent le dos, ils fuient tous sans résister.
Car le jour de leur malheur fond sur eux,
Le temps de leur châtiment.
22 Sa voix se fait entendre comme celle du serpent;
Car ils s’avancent avec une armée,
Ils marchent contre elle avec des haches,
Pareils à des bûcherons.
23 Ils abattent sa forêt, dit l’Éternel,
Bien qu’elle soit impénétrable;
Car ils sont plus nombreux que les sauterelles,
On ne pourrait les compter.
24 La fille de l’Égypte est confuse,
Elle est livrée entre les mains du peuple du septentrion.
25 L’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël, dit:
Voici, je vais châtier Amon de No,
Pharaon, l’Égypte, ses dieux et ses rois,
Pharaon et ceux qui se confient en lui.
26 Je les livrerai entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie,
Entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone,
Et entre les mains de ses serviteurs;
Et après cela, l’Égypte sera habitée comme aux jours d’autrefois,
Dit l’Éternel.
27 Et toi, mon serviteur Jacob, ne crains pas;
Ne t’effraie pas, Israël!
Car je te délivrerai de la terre lointaine,
Je délivrerai ta postérité du pays où elle est captive;
Jacob reviendra, il jouira du repos et de la tranquillité,
Et il n’y aura personne pour le troubler.
28 Toi, mon serviteur Jacob, ne crains pas! Dit l’Éternel;
Car je suis avec toi.
J’anéantirai toutes les nations parmi lesquelles je t’ai dispersé,
Mais toi, je ne t’anéantirai pas;
Je te châtierai avec équité,
Je ne puis pas te laisser impuni.
