The Splendor of the New Temple
1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month of that same year, the Lord spoke again through the prophet Haggai. 2 He told Haggai to speak to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, to Joshua, the High Priest, and to the people, and to say to them, 3 “Is there anyone among you who can still remember how splendid the Temple used to be? How does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing at all. 4 But now don't be discouraged, any of you. Do the work, for I am with you. 5 When you came out of Egypt, I promised that I would always be with you. I am still with you, so do not be afraid.
6 “Before long I will shake heaven and earth, land and sea. 7 I will overthrow all the nations, and their treasures will be brought here, and the Temple will be filled with wealth. 8 All the silver and gold of the world is mine. 9 The new Temple will be more splendid than the old one, and there I will give my people prosperity and peace.” The Lord Almighty has spoken.
The Prophet Consults the Priests
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of the second year that Darius was emperor, the Lord Almighty spoke again to the prophet Haggai. 11 He said, “Ask the priests for a ruling on this question: 12 Suppose someone takes a piece of consecrated meat from a sacrifice and carries it in a fold of his robe. If he then lets his robe touch any bread, cooked food, wine, olive oil, or any kind of food at all, will it make that food consecrated also?”
When the question was asked, the priests answered, “No.”
13 Then Haggai asked, “Suppose someone is defiled because he has touched a dead body. If he then touches any of these foods, will that make them defiled too?”
The priests answered, “Yes.”
14 Then Haggai said, “The Lord says that the same thing applies to the people of this nation and to everything they produce; and so everything they offer on the altar is defiled.”
The Lord Promises His Blessing
15 The Lord says, “Can't you see what has happened to you? Before you started to rebuild the Temple, 16 you would go to a pile of grain expecting to find twenty bushels, but there would be only ten. You would go to draw fifty gallons of wine from a vat, but find only twenty. 17 I sent scorching winds and hail to ruin everything you tried to grow, but still you did not repent. 18 Today is the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day that the foundation of the Temple has been completed. See what is going to happen from now on. 19 Although there is no grain left, and the grapevines, fig trees, pomegranates, and olive trees have not yet produced, yet from now on I will bless you.”
The Lord's Promise to Zerubbabel
20 On that same day, the twenty-fourth of the month, the Lord gave Haggai a second message 21 for Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah: “I am about to shake heaven and earth 22 and overthrow kingdoms and end their power. I will overturn chariots and their drivers; the horses will die, and their riders will kill one another. 23 On that day I will take you, Zerubbabel my servant, and I will appoint you to rule in my name. You are the one I have chosen.” The Lord Almighty has spoken.
La gloire du second temple

És 60.1 Le vingt et unième jour du septième mois, la parole de l’Éternel se révéla par Aggée, le prophète, en ces mots: 2 Parle à Zorobabel, fils de Schealthiel, gouverneur de Juda, à Josué, fils de Jotsadak, le souverain sacrificateur, et au reste du peuple, et dis-leur:
3 Quel est parmi vous le survivant
Qui ait vu cette maison dans sa gloire première?
Et comment la voyez-vous maintenant?
Telle qu’elle est, ne paraît-elle pas comme rien à vos yeux?
4 Maintenant fortifie-toi, Zorobabel! Dit l’Éternel.
Fortifie-toi, Josué, fils de Jotsadak, souverain sacrificateur!
Fortifie-toi, peuple entier du pays! Dit l’Éternel.
Et travaillez!
Car je suis avec vous,
Dit l’Éternel des armées.
5 Je reste fidèle à l’alliance que j’ai faite avec vous
Quand vous sortîtes de l’Égypte,
Et mon esprit est au milieu de vous;
Ne craignez pas!
6 Car ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées:
Encore un peu de temps,
Et j’ébranlerai les cieux et la terre,
La mer et le sec;
7 J’ébranlerai toutes les nations;
Les trésors de toutes les nations viendront,
Et je remplirai de gloire cette maison,
Dit l’Éternel des armées.
8 L’argent est à moi, et l’or est à moi,
Dit l’Éternel des armées.
9 La gloire de cette dernière maison sera plus grande
Que celle de la première,
Dit l’Éternel des armées;
Et c’est dans ce lieu que je donnerai la paix,
Dit l’Éternel des armées.
Bénédiction promise

Za 8Za 9:17.10 Le vingt-quatrième jour du neuvième mois, la seconde année de Darius, la parole de l’Éternel se révéla par Aggée, le prophète, en ces mots: 11 Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées: Propose aux sacrificateurs cette question sur la loi: 12 Si quelqu’un porte dans le pan de son vêtement de la chair consacrée, et qu’il touche avec son vêtement du pain, des mets, du vin, de l’huile, ou un aliment quelconque, ces choses seront-elles sanctifiées? Les sacrificateurs répondirent: Non! 13 Et Aggée dit: Si quelqu’un souillé par le contact d’un cadavre touche toutes ces choses, seront-elles souillées? Les sacrificateurs répondirent: Elles seront souillées. 14 Alors Aggée, reprenant la parole, dit:
Tel est ce peuple, telle est cette nation devant moi, dit l’Éternel,
Telles sont toutes les œuvres de leurs mains;
Ce qu’ils m’offrent là est souillé.
15 Considérez donc attentivement
Ce qui s’est passé jusqu’à ce jour,
Avant qu’on eût mis pierre sur pierre au temple de l’Éternel!
16 Alors, quand on venait à un tas de vingt mesures,
Il n’y en avait que dix;
Quand on venait à la cuve pour puiser cinquante mesures,
Il n’y en avait que vingt.
17 Je vous ai frappés par la rouille et par la nielle, et par la grêle;
J’ai frappé tout le travail de vos mains.
Malgré cela, vous n’êtes pas revenus à moi, dit l’Éternel.
18 Considérez attentivement
Ce qui s’est passé jusqu’à ce jour,
Jusqu’au vingt-quatrième jour du neuvième mois,
Depuis le jour où le temple de l’Éternel a été fondé,
Considérez-le attentivement!
19 Y avait-il encore de la semence dans les greniers?
Même la vigne, le figuier, le grenadier et l’olivier,
N’ont rien rapporté.
Mais dès ce jour je répandrai ma bénédiction.
Destruction des ennemis, et élévation de Zorobabel
V. 20-23: cf. Joë 2:30-32. Za 4:6, etc.20 La parole de l’Éternel fut adressée pour la seconde fois à Aggée, le vingt-quatrième jour du mois, en ces mots:
21 Parle à Zorobabel, gouverneur de Juda, et dis:
J’ébranlerai les cieux et la terre;
22 Je renverserai le trône des royaumes,
Je détruirai la force des royaumes des nations,
Je renverserai les chars et ceux qui les montent;
Les chevaux et leurs cavaliers seront abattus,
L’un par l’épée de l’autre.
23 En ce jour-là, dit l’Éternel des armées,
Je te prendrai, Zorobabel, fils de Schealthiel,
Mon serviteur, dit l’Éternel,
Et je te garderai comme un sceau;
Car je t’ai choisi, dit l’Éternel des armées.
