Hushai Misleads Absalom
1 Not long after that, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and tonight I will set out after David. 2 I will attack him while he is tired and discouraged. He will be frightened, and all his men will run away. I will kill only the king 3 and then bring back all his men to you, like a bride returning to her husband. You want to kill only one man; the rest of the people will be safe.” 4 This seemed like good advice to Absalom and all the Israelite leaders.
5 Absalom said, “Now call Hushai, and let us hear what he has to say.” 6 When Hushai arrived, Absalom said to him, “This is the advice that Ahithophel has given us; shall we follow it? If not, you tell us what to do.”
7 Hushai answered, “The advice Ahithophel gave you this time is no good. 8 You know that your father David and his men are hard fighters and that they are as fierce as a mother bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier and does not stay with his men at night. 9 Right now he is probably hiding in a cave or some other place. As soon as David attacks your men, whoever hears about it will say that your men have been defeated. 10 Then even the bravest men, as fearless as lions, will be afraid because everyone in Israel knows that your father is a great soldier and that his men are hard fighters. 11 My advice is that you bring all the Israelites together from one end of the country to the other, as many as the grains of sand on the seashore, and that you lead them personally in battle. 12 We will find David wherever he is, and attack him before he knows what's happening. Neither he nor any of his men will survive. 13 If he retreats into a city, our people will all bring ropes and just pull the city into the valley below. Not a single stone will be left there on top of the hill.”
14 Absalom and all the Israelites said, “Hushai's advice is better than Ahithophel's.” The Lord had decided that Ahithophel's good advice would not be followed, so that disaster would come on Absalom.
David Is Warned and Escapes
15 Then Hushai told the priests Zadok and Abiathar what advice he had given to Absalom and the Israelite leaders and what advice Ahithophel had given. 16 Hushai added, “Quick, now! Send a message to David not to spend the night at the river crossings in the wilderness, but to cross the Jordan at once, so that he and his men won't all be caught and killed.”
17 Abiathar's son Jonathan and Zadok's son Ahimaaz were waiting at the spring of Enrogel, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, because they did not dare be seen entering the city. A servant woman would regularly go and tell them what was happening, and then they would go and tell King David. 18 But one day a boy happened to see them, and he told Absalom; so they hurried off to hide in the house of a certain man in Bahurim. He had a well near his house, and they got down in it. 19 The man's wife took a covering, spread it over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it, so that no one would notice anything. 20 Absalom's officials came to the house and asked the woman, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
“They crossed the river,” she answered.
The men looked for them but could not find them, and so they returned to Jerusalem. 21 After they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the well and went and reported to King David. They told him what Ahithophel had planned against him and said, “Hurry up and cross the river.” 22 So David and his men started crossing the Jordan, and by daybreak they had all gone across.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and went back to his hometown. After putting his affairs in order, he hanged himself. He was buried in the family grave.
24 David had reached the town of Mahanaim by the time Absalom and the Israelites had crossed the Jordan. ( 25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in the place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether the Ishmaelite; his mother was Abigail, the daughter of Nahash and the sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.) 26 Absalom and his men camped in the land of Gilead.
27 When David arrived at Mahanaim, he was met by Shobi son of Nahash, from the city of Rabbah in Ammon, and by Machir son of Ammiel, from Lodebar, and by Barzillai, from Rogelim in Gilead. 28-29 They brought bowls, clay pots, and bedding, and also food for David and his men: wheat, barley, meal, roasted grain, beans, peas, honey, cheese, cream, and some sheep. They knew that David and his men would get hungry, thirsty, and tired in the wilderness.

Je me lèverai, et je poursuivrai David cette nuit même. 2 Je le surprendrai pendant qu’il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies, je l’épouvanterai, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s’enfuira. Je frapperai le roi seul, 3 et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple; la mort de l’homme à qui tu en veux assurera le retour de tous, et tout le peuple sera en paix. 4 Cette parole plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d’Israël. 5 Cependant Absalom dit: Appelez encore Huschaï, l’Arkien, et que nous entendions aussi ce qu’il dira. 6 Huschaï vint auprès d’Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: Voici comment a parlé Achitophel: devons-nous faire ce qu’il a dit, ou non? Parle, toi! 7 Huschaï répondit à Absalom: Pour cette fois le conseil qu’a donné Achitophel n’est pas bon. 8 Et Huschaï dit: Tu connais la bravoure de ton père et de ses gens, ils sont furieux comme le serait dans les champs une ourse à qui l’on aurait enlevé ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passera pas la nuit avec le peuple; 9 voici maintenant, il est caché dans quelque fosse ou dans quelque autre lieu. Et si, dès le commencement, il en est qui tombent sous leurs coups, on ne tardera pas à l’apprendre et l’on dira: Il y a une défaite parmi le peuple qui suit Absalom! 10 Alors le plus vaillant, eût-il un cœur de lion, sera saisi d’épouvante; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un héros et qu’il a des braves avec lui. 11 Je conseille donc que tout Israël se rassemble auprès de toi, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beer-Schéba, multitude pareille au sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Tu marcheras en personne au combat. 12 Nous arriverons à lui en quelque lieu que nous le trouvions, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol; et pas un n’échappera, ni lui ni aucun des hommes qui sont avec lui. 13 S’il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël portera des cordes vers cette ville, et nous la traînerons au torrent, jusqu’à ce qu’on n’en trouve plus une pierre. 14 Absalom et tous les gens d’Israël dirent: Le conseil de Huschaï, l’Arkien, vaut mieux que le conseil d’Achitophel. Or l’Éternel avait résolu d’anéantir le bon conseil d’Achitophel, afin d’amener le malheur sur Absalom.

Ps 55.15 Huschaï dit aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar: Achitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël; et moi, j’ai conseillé telle et telle chose. 16 Maintenant, envoyez tout de suite informer David et faites-lui dire: Ne passe point la nuit dans les plaines du désert, mais va plus loin, de peur que le roi et tout le peuple qui est avec lui ne soient exposés à périr. 17 Jonathan et Achimaats se tenaient à En-Roguel. Une servante vint leur dire d’aller informer le roi David; car ils n’osaient pas se montrer et entrer dans la ville. 18 Un jeune homme les aperçut, et le rapporta à Absalom. Mais ils partirent tous deux en hâte, et ils arrivèrent à Bachurim à la maison d’un homme qui avait un puits dans sa cour, et ils y descendirent. 19 La femme prit une couverture qu’elle étendit sur l’ouverture du puits, et elle y répandit du grain pilé pour qu’on ne se doutât de rien. 20 Les serviteurs d’Absalom entrèrent dans la maison auprès de cette femme, et dirent: Où sont Achimaats et Jonathan? La femme leur répondit: Ils ont passé le ruisseau. Ils cherchèrent, et ne les trouvant pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem. 21 Après leur départ, Achimaats et Jonathan remontèrent du puits et allèrent informer le roi David. Ils dirent à David: Levez-vous et hâtez-vous de passer l’eau, car Achitophel a conseillé contre vous telle chose. 22 David et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent et ils passèrent le Jourdain; à la lumière du matin, il n’y en avait pas un qui fût resté à l’écart, pas un qui n’eût passé le Jourdain. 23 Achitophel, voyant que son conseil n’était pas suivi, sella son âne et partit pour s’en aller chez lui dans sa ville. Il donna ses ordres à sa maison, et il s’étrangla. C’est ainsi qu’il mourut, et on l’enterra dans le sépulcre de son père.
David à Mahanaïm, au-delà du Jourdain; Absalom à sa poursuite
V. 24-29: cf. (Ps 4; Ps 42Ps 43Ps 61; 63.) 2 S 19:31-39.24 David arriva à Mahanaïm. Et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d’Israël avec lui. 25 Absalom mit Amasa à la tête de l’armée, en remplacement de Joab; Amasa était fils d’un homme appelé Jithra, l’Israélite, qui était allé vers Abigal, fille de Nachasch et sœur de Tseruja, mère de Joab. 26 Israël et Absalom campèrent dans le pays de Galaad. 27 Lorsque David fut arrivé à Mahanaïm, Schobi, fils de Nachasch, de Rabba des fils d’Ammon, Makir, fils d’Ammiel, de Lodebar, et Barzillaï, le Galaadite, de Roguelim, 28 apportèrent des lits, des bassins, des vases de terre, du froment, de l’orge, de la farine, du grain rôti, des fèves, des lentilles, des pois rôtis, 29 du miel, de la crème, des brebis, et des fromages de vache. Ils apportèrent ces choses à David et au peuple qui était avec lui, afin qu’ils mangeassent; car ils disaient: Ce peuple a dû souffrir de la faim, de la fatigue et de la soif, dans le désert.
