War against Edom
1 Some time later the armies of Moab and Ammon, together with their allies, the Meunites, invaded Judah. 2 Some messengers came and announced to King Jehoshaphat: “A large army from Edom has come from the other side of the Dead Sea to attack you. They have already captured Hazazon Tamar.” (This is another name for Engedi.) 3 Jehoshaphat was frightened and prayed to the Lord for guidance. Then he gave orders for a fast to be observed throughout the country. 4 From every city of Judah people hurried to Jerusalem to ask the Lord for guidance, 5 and they and the people of Jerusalem gathered in the new courtyard of the Temple. King Jehoshaphat went and stood before them 6 and prayed aloud, “O Lord God of our ancestors, you rule in heaven over all the nations of the world. You are powerful and mighty, and no one can oppose you. 7 You are our God. When your people Israel moved into this land, you drove out the people who were living here and gave the land to the descendants of Abraham, your friend, to be theirs forever. 8 They have lived here and have built a temple to honor you, knowing 9 that if any disaster struck them to punish them—a war, an epidemic, or a famine—then they could come and stand in front of this Temple where you are worshiped. They could pray to you in their trouble, and you would hear them and rescue them.
10 “Now the people of Ammon, Moab, and Edom have attacked us. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, you did not allow them to enter those lands, so our ancestors went around them and did not destroy them. 11 This is how they repay us—they come to drive us out of the land that you gave us. 12 You are our God! Punish them, for we are helpless in the face of this large army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but we look to you for help.”
13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children, were standing there at the Temple. 14 The spirit of the Lord came upon a Levite who was present in the crowd. His name was Jahaziel son of Zechariah; he was a member of the clan of Asaph and was descended from Asaph through Mattaniah, Jeiel, and Benaiah. 15 Jahaziel said, “Your Majesty and all you people of Judah and Jerusalem, the Lord says that you must not be discouraged or be afraid to face this large army. The battle depends on God, not on you. 16 Attack them tomorrow as they come up the pass at Ziz. You will meet them at the end of the valley that leads to the wild country near Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Just take up your positions and wait; you will see the Lord give you victory. People of Judah and Jerusalem, do not hesitate or be afraid. Go out to battle, and the Lord will be with you!”
18 Then King Jehoshaphat bowed low, with his face touching the ground, and all the people bowed with him and worshiped the Lord. 19 The members of the Levite clans of Kohath and Korah stood up and with a loud shout praised the Lord, the God of Israel.
20 Early the next morning the people went out to the wild country near Tekoa. As they were starting out, Jehoshaphat addressed them with these words: “People of Judah and Jerusalem! Put your trust in the Lord your God, and you will stand your ground. Believe what his prophets tell you, and you will succeed.” 21 After consulting with the people, the king ordered some musicians to put on the robes they wore on sacred occasions and to march ahead of the army, singing: “Praise the Lord! His love is eternal!”
22 When they began to sing, the Lord threw the invading armies into a panic. 23 The Ammonites and the Moabites attacked the Edomite army and completely destroyed it, and then they turned on each other in savage fighting. 24 When the Judean army reached a tower that was in the desert, they looked toward the enemy and saw that they were all lying on the ground dead. Not one had escaped.
25 Jehoshaphat and his troops moved in to take the loot, and they found many cattle, supplies, clothing, and other valuable objects. They spent three days gathering the loot, but there was so much that they could not take everything. 26 On the fourth day they assembled in Beracah Valley and praised the Lord for all he had done. That is why the valley is called “Beracah.” 27 Jehoshaphat led his troops back to Jerusalem in triumph, because the Lord had defeated their enemies. 28 When they reached the city, they marched to the Temple to the music of harps and trumpets. 29 Every nation that heard how the Lord had defeated Israel's enemies was terrified, 30 so Jehoshaphat ruled in peace, and God gave him security on every side.
The End of Jehoshaphat's Reign
(1 Kings 22.41-50)31 Jehoshaphat had become king of Judah at the age of thirty-five and had ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi. 32 Like his father Asa before him, he did what was right in the sight of the Lord; 33 but the pagan places of worship were not destroyed. The people still did not turn wholeheartedly to the worship of the God of their ancestors.
34 Everything else that Jehoshaphat did, from the beginning of his reign to its end, is recorded in The History of Jehu Son of Hanani which is a part of The History of the Kings of Israel.
35 At one time King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who did many wicked things. 36 At the port of Eziongeber they built ocean-going ships. 37 But Eliezer son of Dodavahu, from the town of Mareshah, warned Jehoshaphat, “Because you have made an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord will destroy what you have built.” And the ships were wrecked and never sailed.

V. 1-30: cf. 1 R 8:37-40. 2 Ch 14:8, etc. Ps 46 à 48; 1 37:51 56:4, 1 51 146:5.1 Après cela, les fils de Moab et les fils d’Ammon, et avec eux des Maonites, marchèrent contre Josaphat pour lui faire la guerre. 2 On vint en informer Josaphat, en disant: Une multitude nombreuse s’avance contre toi depuis l’autre côté de la mer, depuis la Syrie, et ils sont à Hatsatson-Thamar, qui est En-Guédi. 3 Dans sa frayeur, Josaphat se disposa à chercher l’Éternel, et il publia un jeûne pour tout Juda. 4 Juda s’assembla pour invoquer l’Éternel, et l’on vint de toutes les villes de Juda pour chercher l’Éternel. 5 Josaphat se présenta au milieu de l’assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem, dans la maison de l’Éternel, devant le nouveau parvis. 6 Et il dit: Éternel, Dieu de nos pères, n’es-tu pas Dieu dans les cieux, et n’est-ce pas toi qui domines sur tous les royaumes des nations? N’est-ce pas toi qui as en main la force et la puissance, et à qui nul ne peut résister? 7 N’est-ce pas toi, ô notre Dieu, qui as chassé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple d’Israël, et qui l’as donné pour toujours à la postérité d’Abraham qui t’aimait? 8 Ils l’ont habité, et ils t’y ont bâti un sanctuaire pour ton nom, en disant: 9 S’il nous survient quelque calamité, l’épée, le jugement, la peste ou la famine, nous nous présenterons devant cette maison et devant toi, car ton nom est dans cette maison, nous crierons à toi du sein de notre détresse, et tu exauceras et tu sauveras! 10 Maintenant voici, les fils d’Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séir, chez lesquels tu n’as pas permis à Israël d’entrer quand il venait du pays d’Égypte, car il s’est détourné d’eux et ne les a pas détruits, 11 les voici qui nous récompensent en venant nous chasser de ton héritage, dont tu nous as mis en possession. 12 O notre Dieu, n’exerceras-tu pas tes jugements sur eux? Car nous sommes sans force devant cette multitude nombreuse qui s’avance contre nous, et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont sur toi. 13 Tout Juda se tenait debout devant l’Éternel, avec leurs petits enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils. 14 Alors l’esprit de l’Éternel saisit au milieu de l’assemblée Jachaziel, fils de Zacharie, fils de Benaja, fils de Jeïel, fils de Matthania, Lévite, d’entre les fils d’Asaph. 15 Et Jachaziel dit: Soyez attentifs, tout Juda et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat! Ainsi vous parle l’Éternel: Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point devant cette multitude nombreuse, car ce ne sera pas vous qui combattrez, ce sera Dieu. 16 Demain, descendez contre eux; ils vont monter par la colline de Tsits, et vous les trouverez à l’extrémité de la vallée, en face du désert de Jeruel. 17 Vous n’aurez point à combattre en cette affaire: présentez-vous, tenez-vous là, et vous verrez la délivrance que l’Éternel vous accordera. Juda et Jérusalem, ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point, demain, sortez à leur rencontre, et l’Éternel sera avec vous! 18 Josaphat s’inclina le visage contre terre, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem tombèrent devant l’Éternel pour se prosterner en sa présence. 19 Les Lévites d’entre les fils des Kehathites et d’entre les fils des Koréites se levèrent pour célébrer d’une voix forte et haute l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël. 20 Le lendemain, ils se mirent en marche de grand matin pour le désert de Tekoa. A leur départ, Josaphat se présenta et dit: Écoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem! Confiez-vous en l’Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous serez affermis; confiez-vous en ses prophètes, et vous réussirez. 21 Puis, d’accord avec le peuple, il nomma des chantres qui, revêtus d’ornements sacrés, et marchant devant l’armée, célébraient l’Éternel et disaient: Louez l’Éternel, car sa miséricorde dure à toujours! 22 Au moment où l’on commençait les chants et les louanges, l’Éternel plaça une embuscade contre les fils d’Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séir, qui étaient venus contre Juda. Et ils furent battus. 23 Les fils d’Ammon et de Moab se jetèrent sur les habitants de la montagne de Séir pour les dévouer par interdit et les exterminer; et quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séir, ils s’aidèrent les uns les autres à se détruire. 24 Lorsque Juda fut arrivé sur la hauteur d’où l’on aperçoit le désert, ils regardèrent du côté de la multitude, et voici, c’étaient des cadavres étendus à terre, et personne n’avait échappé. 25 Josaphat et son peuple allèrent prendre leurs dépouilles; ils trouvèrent parmi les cadavres d’abondantes richesses et des objets précieux, et ils en enlevèrent tant qu’ils ne purent tout emporter. Ils mirent trois jours au pillage du butin, car il était considérable. 26 Le quatrième jour, ils s’assemblèrent dans la vallée de Beraca, où ils bénirent l’Éternel; c’est pourquoi ils appelèrent ce lieu vallée de Beraca, nom qui lui est resté jusqu’à ce jour. 27 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, ayant à leur tête Josaphat, partirent joyeux pour retourner à Jérusalem, car l’Éternel les avait remplis de joie en les délivrant de leurs ennemis. 28 Ils entrèrent à Jérusalem et dans la maison de l’Éternel, au son des luths, des harpes et des trompettes. 29 La terreur de l’Éternel s’empara de tous les royaumes des autres pays, lorsqu’ils apprirent que l’Éternel avait combattu contre les ennemis d’Israël. 30 Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et son Dieu lui donna du repos de tous côtés.
Fin de son règne
20 v. 31 à 21 v. 1: cf. 1 R 22:41-54. Ép 5:7.31 Josaphat régna sur Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Azuba, fille de Schilchi. 32 Il marcha dans la voie de son père Asa, et ne s’en détourna point, faisant ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel. 33 Seulement, les hauts lieux ne disparurent point, et le peuple n’avait point encore le cœur fermement attaché au Dieu de ses pères. 34 Le reste des actions de Josaphat, les premières et les dernières, cela est écrit dans les mémoires de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, lesquels sont insérés dans le livre des rois d’Israël. 35 Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s’associa avec le roi d’Israël, Achazia, dont la conduite était impie. 36 Il s’associa avec lui pour construire des navires destinés à aller à Tarsis, et ils firent les navires à Étsjon-Guéber. 37 Alors Éliézer, fils de Dodava, de Maréscha, prophétisa contre Josaphat, et dit: Parce que tu t’es associé avec Achazia, l’Éternel détruit ton œuvre. Et les navires furent brisés, et ne purent aller à Tarsis.
