From Illiteracy to Independence: Reading God’s Word in Our Own Language
Transforming Lives Through Literacy in Our Communities.
Our literacy projects continue to make a tremendous and life-changing impact across many communities. What began as a small effort to help people read and write in their own local languages has now grown into a movement that is transforming the lives of women, men, and even children.
Across our clusters, more people are joining literacy classes every day. Many of the participants previously had little or no opportunity to attend formal school, which made reading and writing a challenge. Today, through these literacy programs, they are gaining skills that are opening new doors for them in their daily lives.
One of the most beautiful aspects of the project is that people are learning in their **own local languages**. With carefully developed literacy materials and the dedication of our hardworking facilitators, learners are gradually gaining confidence. Step by step, they are learning to recognize letters, form words, read sentences, and eventually read full passages.
The commitment of our facilitators has been a key factor in the success of the program. These facilitators devote their time and energy to teaching, encouraging learners, and creating an environment where everyone feels supported. Their patience and passion have helped many learners overcome the fear and embarrassment that often comes with learning to read later in life.
The impact of literacy is also being felt in the spiritual life of the communities. As more people learn to read in their local languages, they are now able to engage more deeply with Scripture through the translated Bibles available to them. Many learners share how meaningful it is to finally understand the Bible passages that are read during church services.
Because of this new ability to read and understand the Word of God, more people are now attending church. They no longer feel left out during readings or sermons. Instead, they follow along, reflect on the message, and participate more actively in the life of the church.
For many families, the change has been remarkable. Parents who once depended on others to read for them can now read for themselves and even help their children practice reading at home. Children who attend the classes alongside adults are developing strong literacy skills early in life, giving them a brighter future.
The literacy program is therefore not only teaching reading and writing—it is strengthening communities, empowering individuals, and deepening people’s connection to their faith and culture.
As our literacy clusters continue to grow, we remain grateful for the commitment of our facilitators, the enthusiasm of our learners, and the support of the communities we serve. Together, we are witnessing how literacy can truly contribute to the spiritual growth and transform lives.
