1 Il dit: Lorsqu’un homme répudie sa femme,
Qu’elle le quitte et devient la femme d’un autre,
Cet homme retourne-t-il encore vers elle?
Le pays même ne serait-il pas souillé?
Et toi, tu t’es prostituée à de nombreux amants,
Et tu reviendrais à moi! Dit l’Éternel.
2 Lève tes yeux vers les hauteurs, et regarde!
Où ne t’es-tu pas prostituée!
Tu te tenais sur les chemins, comme l’Arabe dans le désert,
Et tu as souillé le pays par tes prostitutions et par ta méchanceté.
3 Aussi les pluies ont-elles été retenues,
Et la pluie du printemps a-t-elle manqué;
Mais tu as eu le front d’une femme prostituée,
Tu n’as pas voulu avoir honte.
4 Maintenant, n’est-ce pas? Tu cries vers moi: Mon père!
Tu as été l’ami de ma jeunesse!
5 Gardera-t-il à toujours sa colère?
La conservera-t-il à jamais?
Et voici, tu as dit, tu as fait des choses criminelles, tu les as consommées.
Exhortations à la repentance
V. 6-10: cf. 2 R 17:6-23.6 L’Éternel me dit, au temps du roi Josias: As-tu vu ce qu’a fait l’infidèle Israël? Elle est allée sur toute montagne élevée et sous tout arbre vert, et là elle s’est prostituée. 7 Je disais: Après avoir fait toutes ces choses, elle reviendra à moi. Mais elle n’est pas revenue. Et sa sœur, la perfide Juda, en a été témoin. 8 Quoique j’eusse répudié l’infidèle Israël à cause de tous ses adultères, et que je lui eusse donné sa lettre de divorce, j’ai vu que la perfide Juda, sa sœur, n’a point eu de crainte, et qu’elle est allée se prostituer pareillement. 9 Par sa criante impudicité Israël a souillé le pays, elle a commis un adultère avec la pierre et le bois. 10 Malgré tout cela, la perfide Juda, sa sœur, n’est pas revenue à moi de tout son cœur; c’est avec fausseté qu’elle l’a fait, dit l’Éternel.

En comparaison de la perfide Juda.
12 Va, crie ces paroles vers le septentrion, et dis:
Reviens, infidèle Israël! Dit l’Éternel.
Je ne jetterai pas sur vous un regard sévère;
Car je suis miséricordieux, dit l’Éternel,
Je ne garde pas ma colère à toujours.
13 Reconnais seulement ton iniquité,
Reconnais que tu as été infidèle à l’Éternel, ton Dieu,
Que tu as dirigé çà et là tes pas vers les dieux étrangers,
Sous tout arbre vert,
Et que tu n’as pas écouté ma voix, dit l’Éternel.
14 Revenez, enfants rebelles, dit l’Éternel;
Car je suis votre maître.
Je vous prendrai, un d’une ville, deux d’une famille,
Et je vous ramènerai dans Sion.
15 Je vous donnerai des bergers selon mon cœur,
Et ils vous paîtront avec intelligence et avec sagesse.
16 Lorsque vous aurez multiplié et fructifié dans le pays,
En ces jours-là, dit l’Éternel,
On ne parlera plus de l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel;
Elle ne viendra plus à la pensée;
On ne se la rappellera plus, on ne s’apercevra plus de son absence,
Et l’on n’en fera point une autre.
17 En ce temps-là, on appellera Jérusalem le trône de l’Éternel;
Toutes les nations s’assembleront à Jérusalem, au nom de l’Éternel,
Et elles ne suivront plus les penchants de leur mauvais cœur.
18 En ces jours,
La maison de Juda marchera avec la maison d’Israël;
Elles viendront ensemble du pays du septentrion
Au pays dont j’ai donné la possession à vos pères.
19 Je disais: Comment te mettrai-je parmi mes enfants,
Et te donnerai-je un pays de délices,
Un héritage, le plus bel ornement des nations?
Je disais: Tu m’appelleras: Mon père!
Et tu ne te détourneras pas de moi.
20 Mais, comme une femme est infidèle à son amant,
Ainsi vous m’avez été infidèles, maison d’Israël,
Dit l’Éternel.
21 Une voix se fait entendre sur les lieux élevés;
Ce sont les pleurs, les supplications des enfants d’Israël;
Car ils ont perverti leur voie,
Ils ont oublié l’Éternel, leur Dieu.
22 Revenez, enfants rebelles,
Je pardonnerai vos infidélités.
Nous voici, nous allons à toi,
Car tu es l’Éternel, notre Dieu.
23 Oui, le bruit qui vient des collines et des montagnes n’est que mensonge;
Oui, c’est en l’Éternel, notre Dieu, qu’est le salut d’Israël.
24 Les idoles ont dévoré le produit du travail de nos pères,
Dès notre jeunesse,
Leurs brebis et leurs bœufs, leurs fils et leurs filles.
25 Nous avons notre honte pour couche,
Et notre ignominie pour couverture;
Car nous avons péché contre l’Éternel, notre Dieu,
Nous et nos pères, dès notre jeunesse jusqu’à ce jour,
Et nous n’avons pas écouté la voix de l’Éternel, notre Dieu.
Unfaithful Israel
1 The Lord says, “If a man divorces his wife, and she leaves him and becomes another man's wife, he cannot take her back again. This would completely defile the land. But, Israel, you have had many lovers, and now you want to return to me! 2 Look up at the hilltops. Is there any place where you have not acted like a prostitute? You waited for lovers along the roadside, as an Arab waits for victims in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution. 3 That is why the rains were held back, and the spring showers did not come. You even look like a prostitute; you have no shame.
4 “And now you say to me, ‘You are my father, and you have loved me ever since I was a child. 5 You won't always be angry; you won't be mad at me forever.’ Israel, that is what you said, but you did all the evil you could.”
Israel and Judah Must Repent
6 When Josiah was king, the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what Israel, that unfaithful woman, has done? She has turned away from me, and on every high hill and under every green tree she has acted like a prostitute. 7 I thought that after she had done all this, she would surely return to me. But she did not return, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it all. 8 Judah also saw that I divorced Israel and sent her away because she had turned from me and had become a prostitute. But Judah, Israel's unfaithful sister, was not afraid. She too became a prostitute 9 and was not at all ashamed. She defiled the land, and she committed adultery by worshiping stones and trees. 10 And after all this, Judah, Israel's unfaithful sister, only pretended to return to me; she was not sincere. I, the Lord, have spoken.”
11 Then the Lord told me that, even though Israel had turned away from him, she had proved to be better than unfaithful Judah. 12 He told me to go and say to Israel, “Unfaithful Israel, come back to me. I am merciful and will not be angry; I will not be angry with you forever. 13 Only admit that you are guilty and that you have rebelled against the Lord, your God. Confess that under every green tree you have given your love to foreign gods and that you have not obeyed my commands. I, the Lord, have spoken.
14 “Unfaithful people, come back; you belong to me. I will take one of you from each town and two from each clan, and I will bring you back to Mount Zion. 15 I will give you rulers who obey me, and they will rule you with wisdom and understanding. 16 Then when you have become numerous in that land, people will no longer talk about my Covenant Box. They will no longer think about it or remember it; they will not even need it, nor will they make another one. 17 When that time comes, Jerusalem will be called ‘The Throne of the Lord,’ and all nations will gather there to worship me. They will no longer do what their stubborn and evil hearts tell them. 18 Israel will join with Judah, and together they will come from exile in the country in the north and will return to the land that I gave your ancestors as a permanent possession.”
The Idolatry of God's People
19 The Lord says,
“Israel, I wanted to accept you as my child
and give you a delightful land,
the most beautiful land in all the world.
I wanted you to call me father
and never again turn away from me.
20 But like an unfaithful wife,
you have not been faithful to me.
I, the Lord, have spoken.”
21 A noise is heard on the hilltops:
it is the people of Israel crying and pleading
because they have lived sinful lives
and have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 Return, all of you who have turned away from the Lord;
he will heal you and make you faithful.
You say, “Yes, we are coming to the Lord because he is our God. 23 We were not helped at all by our pagan worship on the hilltops. Help for Israel comes only from the Lord our God. 24 But the worship of Baal, the god of shame, has made us lose flocks and herds, sons and daughters—everything that our ancestors have worked for since ancient times. 25 We should lie down in shame and let our disgrace cover us. We and our ancestors have always sinned against the Lord our God; we have never obeyed his commands.”
