L’Éternel seul est Dieu
V. 1-5: cf. (Éz 36:24-30. Joë 2:28, Joë 29. Ac 2:16-18.) Za 2:10, 11.1 Écoute maintenant, ô Jacob, mon serviteur!
O Israël, que j’ai choisi!
2 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, qui t’a fait,
Et qui t’a formé dès ta naissance,
Celui qui est ton soutien:
Ne crains rien, mon serviteur Jacob,
Mon Israël, que j’ai choisi.
3 Car je répandrai des eaux sur le sol altéré,
Et des ruisseaux sur la terre desséchée;
Je répandrai mon esprit sur ta race,
Et ma bénédiction sur tes rejetons.
4 Ils pousseront comme au milieu de l’herbe,
Comme les saules près des courants d’eau.
5 Celui-ci dira: Je suis à l’Éternel;
Celui-là se réclamera du nom de Jacob;
Cet autre écrira de sa main: à l’Éternel!
Et prononcera avec amour le nom d’Israël.

L’Éternel des armées:
Je suis le premier et je suis le dernier,
Et hors moi il n’y a point de Dieu.
7 Qui a, comme moi, fait des prédictions
(Qu’il le déclare et me le prouve!)
Depuis que j’ai fondé le peuple ancien?
Qu’ils annoncent l’avenir et ce qui doit arriver!
8 N’ayez pas peur, et ne tremblez pas;
Ne te l’ai-je pas dès longtemps annoncé et déclaré?
Vous êtes mes témoins:
Y a-t-il un autre Dieu que moi?
Il n’y a pas d’autre rocher, je n’en connais point.
Les fabricateurs d’idoles
9 Ceux qui fabriquent des idoles ne sont tous que vanité,
Et leurs plus belles œuvres ne servent à rien;
Elles le témoignent elles-mêmes:
Elles n’ont ni la vue, ni l’intelligence,
Afin qu’ils soient dans la confusion.
10 Qui est-ce qui fabrique un dieu, ou fond une idole,
Pour n’en retirer aucune utilité?
11 Voici, tous ceux qui y travaillent seront confondus,
Et les ouvriers ne sont que des hommes;
Qu’ils se réunissent tous, qu’ils se présentent,
Et tous ensemble ils seront tremblants et couverts de honte.
12 Le forgeron fait une hache,
Il travaille avec le charbon,
Et il la façonne à coups de marteau;
Il la forge d’un bras vigoureux;
Mais a-t-il faim, le voilà sans force;
Ne boit-il pas d’eau, le voilà épuisé.
13 Le charpentier étend le cordeau,
Fait un tracé au crayon,
Façonne le bois avec un couteau,
Et marque ses dimensions avec le compas;
Et il produit une figure d’homme,
Une belle forme humaine,
Pour qu’elle habite dans une maison.
14 Il se coupe des cèdres,
Il prend des rouvres et des chênes,
Et fait un choix parmi les arbres de la forêt;
Il plante des pins,
Et la pluie les fait croître.
15 Ces arbres servent à l’homme pour brûler,
Il en prend et il se chauffe.
Il y met aussi le feu pour cuire du pain;
Et il en fait également un dieu, qu’il adore,
Il en fait une idole, devant laquelle il se prosterne.
16 Il brûle au feu la moitié de son bois,
Avec cette moitié il cuit de la viande,
Il apprête un rôti, et se rassasie;
Il se chauffe aussi, et dit: Ha! Ha!
Je me chauffe, je vois la flamme!
17 Et avec le reste il fait un dieu, son idole,
Il se prosterne devant elle, il l’adore, il l’invoque,
Et s’écrie: Sauve-moi!
Car tu es mon dieu!
18 Ils n’ont ni intelligence, ni entendement,
Car on leur a fermé les yeux pour qu’ils ne voient point,
Et le cœur pour qu’ils ne comprennent point.
19 Il ne rentre pas en lui-même,
Et il n’a ni l’intelligence, ni le bon sens de dire:
J’en ai brûlé une moitié au feu,
J’ai cuit du pain sur les charbons,
J’ai rôti de la viande et je l’ai mangée;
Et avec le reste je ferais une abomination!
Je me prosternerais devant un morceau de bois!
20 Il se repaît de cendres,
Son cœur abusé l’égare,
Et il ne sauvera point son âme, et ne dira point:
N’est-ce pas du mensonge que j’ai dans ma main?
Mission de Cyrus
V. 21-28: cf. (Os 14:1-4. Mi 7:18-20.) (És 48:12-16, 20. Esd 1.)21 Souviens-toi de ces choses, ô Jacob!
O Israël! Car tu es mon serviteur;
Je t’ai formé, tu es mon serviteur;
Israël, je ne t’oublierai pas.
22 J’efface tes transgressions comme un nuage,
Et tes péchés comme une nuée;
Reviens à moi,
Car je t’ai racheté.
23 Cieux, réjouissez-vous! Car l’Éternel a agi;
Profondeurs de la terre, retentissez d’allégresse!
Montagnes, éclatez en cris de joie!
Vous aussi, forêts, avec tous vos arbres!
Car l’Éternel a racheté Jacob,
Il a manifesté sa gloire en Israël.
24 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, ton rédempteur,
Celui qui t’a formé dès ta naissance:
Moi, l’Éternel, j’ai fait toutes choses,
Seul j’ai déployé les cieux,
Seul j’ai étendu la terre.
25 J’anéantis les signes des prophètes de mensonge,
Et je proclame insensés les devins;
Je fais reculer les sages,
Et je tourne leur science en folie.
26 Je confirme la parole de mon serviteur,
Et j’accomplis ce que prédisent mes envoyés;
Je dis de Jérusalem: Elle sera habitée,
Et des villes de Juda: Elles seront rebâties;
Et je relèverai leurs ruines.
27 Je dis à l’abîme: Dessèche-toi,
Je tarirai tes fleuves.
28 Je dis de Cyrus: Il est mon berger,
Et il accomplira toute ma volonté;
Il dira de Jérusalem: Qu’elle soit rebâtie!
Et du temple: Qu’il soit fondé!
The Lord Is the Only God
1 The Lord says,
“Listen now, Israel, my servant,
my chosen people, the descendants of Jacob.
2 I am the Lord who created you;
from the time you were born, I have helped you.
Do not be afraid; you are my servant,
my chosen people whom I love.
3 “I will give water to the thirsty land
and make streams flow on the dry ground.
I will pour out my spirit on your children
and my blessing on your descendants.
4 They will thrive like well-watered grass,
like willows by streams of running water.
5 “One by one, people will say, ‘I am the Lord's.’
They will come to join the people of Israel.
They each will mark the name of the Lord on their arms
and call themselves one of God's people.”
6 The Lord, who rules and protects Israel,
the Lord Almighty, has this to say:
“I am the first, the last, the only God;
there is no other god but me.
7 Could anyone else have done what I did?
Who could have predicted all that would happen
from the very beginning to the end of time?
8 Do not be afraid, my people!
You know that from ancient times until now
I have predicted all that would happen,
and you are my witnesses.
Is there any other god?
Is there some powerful god I never heard of?”
Idolatry Is Ridiculed
9 All those who make idols are worthless, and the gods they prize so highly are useless. Those who worship these gods are blind and ignorant—and they will be disgraced. 10 It does no good to make a metal image to worship as a god! 11 Everyone who worships it will be humiliated. The people who make idols are human beings and nothing more. Let them come and stand trial—they will be terrified and will suffer disgrace.
12 The metalworker takes a piece of metal and works with it over a fire. His strong arm swings a hammer to pound the metal into shape. As he works, he gets hungry, thirsty, and tired.
13 The carpenter measures the wood. He outlines a figure with chalk, carves it out with his tools, and makes it in the form of a man, a handsome human figure, to be placed in his house. 14 He might cut down cedars to use, or choose oak or cypress wood from the forest. Or he might plant a laurel tree and wait for the rain to make it grow. 15 A person uses part of a tree for fuel and part of it for making an idol. With one part he builds a fire to warm himself and bake bread; with the other part he makes a god and worships it. 16 With some of the wood he makes a fire; he roasts meat, eats it, and is satisfied. He warms himself and says, “How nice and warm! What a beautiful fire!” 17 The rest of the wood he makes into an idol, and then he bows down and worships it. He prays to it and says, “You are my god—save me!”
18 Such people are too stupid to know what they are doing. They close their eyes and their minds to the truth. 19 The maker of idols hasn't the wit or the sense to say, “Some of the wood I burned up. I baked some bread on the coals, and I roasted meat and ate it. And the rest of the wood I made into an idol. Here I am bowing down to a block of wood!”
20 It makes as much sense as eating ashes. His foolish ideas have so misled him that he is beyond help. He won't admit to himself that the idol he holds in his hand is not a god at all.
The Lord, the Creator and Savior
21 The Lord says,
“Israel, remember this;
remember that you are my servant.
I created you to be my servant,
and I will never forget you.
22 I have swept your sins away like a cloud.
Come back to me; I am the one who saves you.”
23 Shout for joy, you heavens!
Shout, deep places of the earth!
Shout for joy, mountains, and every tree of the forest!
The Lord has shown his greatness
by saving his people Israel.
24 “I am the Lord, your savior;
I am the one who created you.
I am the Lord, the Creator of all things.
I alone stretched out the heavens;
when I made the earth, no one helped me.
25 I make fools of fortunetellers
and frustrate the predictions of astrologers.
The words of the wise I refute
and show that their wisdom is foolishness.
26 But when my servant makes a prediction,
when I send a messenger to reveal my plans,
I make those plans and predictions come true.
I tell Jerusalem that people will live there again,
and the cities of Judah that they will be rebuilt.
Those cities will rise from the ruins.
27 With a word of command I dry up the ocean.
28 I say to Cyrus, ‘You are the one who will rule for me;
you will do what I want you to do:
you will order that Jerusalem be rebuilt
and that the foundations of the Temple be laid.’”
