La punition des rebelles
V. 1-4: cf. Os 8:11-14. Lé 26:30-33.1 Le péché de Juda est écrit avec un burin de fer,
Avec une pointe de diamant;
Il est gravé sur la table de leur cœur,
Et sur les cornes de vos autels.
2 Comme ils pensent à leurs enfants, ainsi pensent-ils à leurs autels
Et à leurs idoles d’Astarté près des arbres verts,
Sur les collines élevées.
3 Je livre au pillage ma montagne et ses champs, tes biens, tous tes trésors,
Et tes hauts lieux, à cause de tes péchés, sur tout ton territoire.
4 Tu perdras par ta faute l’héritage que je t’avais donné;
Je t’asservirai à ton ennemi dans un pays que tu ne connais pas;
Car vous avez allumé le feu de ma colère,
Et il brûlera toujours.
V. 5-8: cf. Ps 146:3, etc.5 Ainsi parle l’Éternel:
Maudit soit l’homme qui se confie dans l’homme,
Qui prend la chair pour son appui,
Et qui détourne son cœur de l’Éternel!
6 Il est comme un misérable dans le désert,
Et il ne voit point arriver le bonheur;
Il habite les lieux brûlés du désert,
Une terre salée et sans habitants.
7 Béni soit l’homme qui se confie dans l’Éternel,
Et dont l’Éternel est l’espérance!
8 Il est comme un arbre planté près des eaux,
Et qui étend ses racines vers le courant;
Il n’aperçoit point la chaleur quand elle vient,
Et son feuillage reste vert;
Dans l’année de la sécheresse, il n’a point de crainte,
Et il ne cesse de porter du fruit.
V. 9-13: cf. Ps 14:2, Ps 3. Ro 2:1-11.9 Le cœur est tortueux par-dessus tout, et il est méchant:
Qui peut le connaître?
10 Moi, l’Éternel, j’éprouve le cœur, je sonde les reins,
Pour rendre à chacun selon ses voies,
Selon le fruit de ses œuvres.
11 Comme une perdrix qui couve des œufs qu’elle n’a point pondus,
Tel est celui qui acquiert des richesses injustement;
Au milieu de ses jours il doit les quitter,
Et à la fin il n’est qu’un insensé.
12 Il est un trône de gloire, élevé dès le commencement,
C’est le lieu de notre sanctuaire.
13 Toi qui es l’espérance d’Israël, ô Éternel!
Tous ceux qui t’abandonnent seront confondus.
Ceux qui se détournent de moi seront inscrits sur la terre,
Car ils abandonnent la source d’eau vive, l’Éternel.
V. 14-18: cf. Ps 125. Jé 20:10-13.14 Guéris-moi, Éternel, et je serai guéri;
Sauve-moi, et je serai sauvé;
Car tu es ma gloire.
15 Voici, ils me disent:
Où est la parole de l’Éternel?
Qu’elle s’accomplisse donc!
16 Et moi, pour t’obéir, je n’ai pas refusé d’être pasteur;
Je n’ai pas non plus désiré le jour du malheur, tu le sais;
Ce qui est sorti de mes lèvres a été découvert devant toi.
17 Ne sois pas pour moi un sujet d’effroi,
Toi, mon refuge au jour du malheur!
18 Que mes persécuteurs soient confus, et que je ne sois pas confus;
Qu’ils tremblent, et que je ne tremble pas, moi!
Fais venir sur eux le jour du malheur,
Frappe-les d’une double plaie!
La sanctification du sabbat
V. 19-27: cf. (Ex 20:8-11. Né 13:15-21. És 58:13, 14.)19 Ainsi m’a parlé l’Éternel: Va, et tiens-toi à la porte des enfants du peuple, par laquelle entrent et sortent les rois de Juda, et à toutes les portes de Jérusalem. 20 Tu leur diras: Écoutez la parole de l’Éternel, rois de Juda, et tout Juda, et vous tous, habitants de Jérusalem, qui entrez par ces portes!
21 Ainsi parle l’Éternel:
Prenez garde à vos âmes;
Ne portez point de fardeau le jour du sabbat,
Et n’en introduisez point par les portes de Jérusalem.
22 Ne sortez de vos maisons aucun fardeau le jour du sabbat,
Et ne faites aucun ouvrage;
Mais sanctifiez le jour du sabbat,
Comme je l’ai ordonné à vos pères.
23 Ils n’ont pas écouté, ils n’ont pas prêté l’oreille;
Ils ont raidi leur cou,
Pour ne point écouter et ne point recevoir instruction.
24 Si vous m’écoutez, dit l’Éternel,
Si vous n’introduisez point de fardeau
Par les portes de cette ville le jour du sabbat,
Si vous sanctifiez le jour du sabbat,
Et ne faites aucun ouvrage ce jour-là,
25 Alors entreront par les portes de cette ville
Les rois et les princes assis sur le trône de David,
Montés sur des chars et sur des chevaux,
Eux et leurs princes, les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem,
Et cette ville sera habitée à toujours.
26 On viendra des villes de Juda et des environs de Jérusalem,
Du pays de Benjamin, de la vallée,
De la montagne et du midi,
Pour amener des holocaustes et des victimes,
Pour apporter des offrandes et de l’encens,
Et pour offrir des sacrifices d’actions de grâces dans la maison de l’Éternel.
27 Mais si vous n’écoutez pas quand je vous ordonne
De sanctifier le jour du sabbat,
De ne porter aucun fardeau,
De ne point en introduire par les portes de Jérusalem le jour du sabbat,
Alors j’allumerai un feu aux portes de la ville,
Et il dévorera les palais de Jérusalem et ne s’éteindra point.
The Sin and Punishment of Judah
1 The Lord says, “People of Judah, your sin is written with an iron pen; it is engraved on your hearts with a diamond point and carved on the corners of your altars. 2 Your people worship at the altars and the symbols that have been set up for the goddess Asherah by every green tree and on the hilltops 3 and on the mountains in the open country. I will have your enemies take away your wealth and your treasures because of all the sins you have committed throughout your land. 4 You will have to give up the land I gave you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land you know nothing about, because my anger is like a fire, and it will burn forever.”
Various Sayings
5 The Lord says,
“I will condemn those
who turn away from me
and put their trust in human beings,
in the strength of mortals.
6 He is like a bush in the desert,
which grows in the dry wasteland,
on salty ground where nothing else grows.
Nothing good ever happens to him.
7 “But I will bless the person
who puts his trust in me.
8 He is like a tree growing near a stream
and sending out roots to the water.
It is not afraid when hot weather comes,
because its leaves stay green;
it has no worries when there is no rain;
it keeps on bearing fruit.
9 “Who can understand the human heart?
There is nothing else so deceitful;
it is too sick to be healed.
10 I, the Lord, search the minds
and test the hearts of people.
I treat each of them according to the way they live,
according to what they do.”
11 The person who gets money dishonestly
is like a bird that hatches eggs it didn't lay.
In the prime of life he will lose his riches,
and in the end he is nothing but a fool.
12 Our Temple is like a glorious throne,
standing on a high mountain from the beginning.
13 Lord, you are Israel's hope;
all who abandon you will be put to shame.
They will disappear like names written in the dust,
because they have abandoned you, the Lord,
the spring of fresh water.
Jeremiah Asks the Lord for Help
14 Lord, heal me and I will be completely well; rescue me and I will be perfectly safe. You are the one I praise!
15 The people say to me, “Where are those threats the Lord made against us? Let him carry them out now!”
16 But, Lord, I never urged you to bring disaster on them; I did not wish a time of trouble for them. Lord, you know this; you know what I have said. 17 Do not be a terror to me; you are my place of safety when trouble comes. 18 Bring disgrace on those who persecute me, but spare me, Lord. Fill them with terror, but do not terrify me. Bring disaster on them and break them to pieces.
On Observing the Sabbath
19 The Lord said to me, “Jeremiah, go and announce my message at the People's Gate, through which the kings of Judah enter and leave the city; then go to all the other gates of Jerusalem. 20 Tell the kings and all the people of Judah and everyone who lives in Jerusalem and enters these gates, to listen to what I say. 21 Tell them that if they love their lives, they must not carry any load on the Sabbath; they must not carry anything in through the gates of Jerusalem 22 or carry anything out of their houses on the Sabbath. They must not work on the Sabbath; they must observe it as a sacred day, as I commanded their ancestors. 23 Their ancestors did not listen to me or pay any attention. Instead, they became stubborn; they would not obey me or learn from me.
24 “Tell these people that they must obey all my commands. They must not carry any load in through the gates of this city on the Sabbath. They must observe the Sabbath as a sacred day and must not do any work at all. 25 Then their kings and princes will enter the gates of Jerusalem and have the same royal power that David had. Together with the people of Judah and of Jerusalem, they will ride in chariots and on horses, and the city of Jerusalem will always be filled with people. 26 People will come from the towns of Judah and from the villages around Jerusalem; they will come from the territory of Benjamin, from the foothills, from the mountains, and from southern Judah. They will bring to my Temple burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, as well as thank offerings. 27 But they must obey me and observe the Sabbath as a sacred day. They must not carry any load through the gates of Jerusalem on that day, for if they do, I will set the gates of Jerusalem on fire. Fire will burn down the palaces of Jerusalem, and no one will be able to put it out.”
