Rétablissement de la tribu de Benjamin

(Jg 11:30, etc. 1 S 14:24, etc.)1 Les hommes d’Israël avaient juré à Mitspa, en disant: Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjamite. 2 Le peuple vint à Béthel, et il y resta devant Dieu jusqu’au soir. Ils élevèrent la voix, ils versèrent d’abondantes larmes, 3 et ils dirent: O Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, pourquoi est-il arrivé en Israël qu’il manque aujourd’hui une tribu d’Israël? 4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils bâtirent là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. 5 Les enfants d’Israël dirent: Quel est celui d’entre toutes les tribus d’Israël qui n’est pas monté à l’assemblée devant l’Éternel? Car on avait fait un serment solennel contre quiconque ne monterait pas vers l’Éternel à Mitspa, on avait dit: Il sera puni de mort. 6 Les enfants d’Israël éprouvaient du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils disaient: Aujourd’hui une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël. 7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui ont survécu, puisque nous avons juré par l’Éternel de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes? 8 Ils dirent donc: Y a-t-il quelqu’un d’entre les tribus d’Israël qui ne soit pas monté vers l’Éternel à Mitspa? Et voici, personne de Jabès en Galaad n’était venu au camp, à l’assemblée. 9 On fit le dénombrement du peuple, et il n’y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad. 10 Alors l’assemblée envoya contre eux douze mille soldats, en leur donnant cet ordre: Allez, et frappez du tranchant de l’épée les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, avec les femmes et les enfants. 11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous dévouerez par interdit tout mâle et toute femme qui a connu la couche d’un homme. 12 Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges qui n’avaient point connu d’homme en couchant avec lui, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan. 13 Toute l’assemblée envoya des messagers pour parler aux fils de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et pour leur annoncer la paix. 14 En ce temps-là, les Benjamites revinrent, et on leur donna les femmes à qui l’on avait laissé la vie parmi les femmes de Jabès en Galaad. Mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux. 15 Le peuple éprouvait du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, car l’Éternel avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d’Israël. 16 Les anciens de l’assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été détruites? 17 Et ils dirent: Que les réchappés de Benjamin conservent leur héritage, afin qu’une tribu ne soit pas effacée d’Israël. 18 Mais nous ne pouvons pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes, car les enfants d’Israël ont juré, en disant: Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à un Benjamite! 19 Et ils dirent: Voici, il y a chaque année une fête de l’Éternel à Silo, qui est au nord de Béthel, à l’orient de la route qui monte de Béthel, à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona. 20 Puis ils donnèrent cet ordre aux fils de Benjamin: Allez, et placez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes. 21 Vous regarderez, et voici, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo pour en faire votre femme, et vous vous en irez dans le pays de Benjamin. 22 Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre auprès de nous, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les-nous, car nous n’avons pas pris une femme pour chacun dans la guerre. Ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données; en ce cas, vous seriez coupables. 23 Ainsi firent les fils de Benjamin; ils prirent des femmes selon leur nombre parmi les danseuses qu’ils enlevèrent, puis ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage; ils rebâtirent les villes, et y habitèrent. 24 Et dans le même temps les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent de là chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille, ils retournèrent chacun dans son héritage. 25 En ce temps-là, il n’y avait point de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
Wives for the Tribe of Benjamin
1 When the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, they had made a solemn promise to the Lord: “None of us will allow a Benjaminite to marry a daughter of ours.” 2 So now the people of Israel went to Bethel and sat there in the presence of God until evening. Loudly and bitterly they mourned: 3 “Lord God of Israel, why has this happened? Why is the tribe of Benjamin about to disappear from Israel?”
4 Early the next morning the people got up and built an altar there. They offered fellowship sacrifices and burned some sacrifices whole. 5 They asked, “Is there any group out of all the tribes of Israel that did not go to the gathering in the Lord's presence at Mizpah?” (They had taken a solemn oath that anyone who had not gone to Mizpah would be put to death.) 6 The people of Israel felt sorry for their brothers the Benjaminites and said, “Today Israel has lost one of its tribes. 7 What shall we do to provide wives for the men of Benjamin who are left? We have made a solemn promise to the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters.”
8 When they asked if there was some group out of the tribes of Israel that had not gone to the gathering at Mizpah, they found out that no one from Jabesh in Gilead had been there; 9 at the roll call of the army no one from Jabesh had responded. 10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand of their bravest men with the orders, “Go and kill everyone in Jabesh, including women and children. 11 Kill all the males, and also every woman who is not a virgin.” 12 They found four hundred young virgins among the people in Jabesh, so they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Then the whole assembly sent word to the Benjaminites who were at Rimmon Rock and offered to end the war. 14 The Benjaminites came back, and the other Israelites gave them the young women from Jabesh whom they had not killed. But there were not enough of them.
15 The people felt sorry for the Benjaminites because the Lord had broken the unity of the tribes of Israel. 16 So the leaders of the gathering said, “There are no more women in the tribe of Benjamin. What shall we do to provide wives for the men who are left? 17 Israel must not lose one of its twelve tribes. We must find a way for the tribe of Benjamin to survive, 18 but we cannot allow them to marry our daughters, because we have put a curse on anyone who allows a Benjaminite to marry one of our daughters.”
19 Then they thought, “The yearly festival of the Lord at Shiloh is coming soon.” (Shiloh is north of Bethel, south of Lebonah, and east of the road between Bethel and Shechem.) 20 They told the Benjaminites, “Go and hide in the vineyards 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to dance during the festival, you come out of the vineyards. Each of you take a wife by force from among them and take her back to the territory of Benjamin with you. 22 If their fathers or brothers come to you and protest, you can tell them, ‘Please let us keep them, because we did not take them from you in battle to be our wives. And since you did not give them to us, you are not guilty of breaking your promise.’”
23 The Benjaminites did this; each of them chose a wife from the young women who were dancing at Shiloh and carried her away. Then they went back to their own territory, rebuilt their towns, and lived there. 24 At the same time the rest of the Israelites left, and every man went back to his own tribe and family and to his own property.
25 There was no king in Israel at that time. Everyone did whatever they pleased.
