Ézéchias, roi de Juda
V. 1-19: cf. 2 R 18:1-6. 2 Ch 34:1-10. És 52:1. Jn 1:48Jn 2:17.1 Ézéchias devint roi à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans, et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Abija, fille de Zacharie. 2 Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel, entièrement comme avait fait David, son père. 3 La première année de son règne, au premier mois, il ouvrit les portes de la maison de l’Éternel, et il les répara. 4 Il fit venir les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, qu’il assembla dans la place orientale, 5 et il leur dit: Écoutez-moi, Lévites! Maintenant sanctifiez-vous, sanctifiez la maison de l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et mettez ce qui est impur hors du sanctuaire. 6 Car nos pères ont péché, ils ont fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, ils l’ont abandonné, ils ont détourné leurs regards du tabernacle de l’Éternel et lui ont tourné le dos. 7 Ils ont même fermé les portes du portique et éteint les lampes, et ils n’ont offert au Dieu d’Israël ni parfums ni holocaustes dans le sanctuaire. 8 Aussi la colère de l’Éternel a été sur Juda et sur Jérusalem, et il les a livrés au trouble, à la désolation et à la moquerie, comme vous le voyez de vos yeux. 9 Et voici, à cause de cela nos pères sont tombés par l’épée, et nos fils, nos filles et nos femmes sont en captivité. 10 J’ai donc l’intention de faire alliance avec l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, pour que son ardente colère se détourne de nous. 11 Maintenant, mes fils, cessez d’être négligents; car vous avez été choisis par l’Éternel pour vous tenir à son service devant lui, pour être ses serviteurs, et pour lui offrir des parfums. 12 Et les Lévites se levèrent: Machath, fils d’Amasaï, Joël, fils d’Azaria, des fils des Kehathites; et des fils des Merarites, Kis, fils d’Abdi, Azaria, fils de Jehalléleel; et des Guerschonites, Joach, fils de Zimma, Éden, fils de Joach; 13 et des fils d’Élitsaphan, Schimri et Jeïel; et des fils d’Asaph, Zacharie et Matthania; 14 et des fils d’Héman, Jehiel et Schimeï; et des fils de Jeduthun, Schemaeja et Uzziel. 15 Ils réunirent leurs frères, et, après s’être sanctifiés, ils vinrent pour purifier la maison de l’Éternel, selon l’ordre du roi et d’après les paroles de l’Éternel. 16 Les sacrificateurs entrèrent dans l’intérieur de la maison de l’Éternel pour la purifier; ils sortirent toutes les impuretés qu’ils trouvèrent dans le temple de l’Éternel et les mirent dans le parvis de la maison de l’Éternel, où les Lévites les reçurent pour les emporter dehors au torrent de Cédron. 17 Ils commencèrent ces purifications le premier jour du premier mois; le huitième jour du mois, ils entrèrent dans le portique de l’Éternel, et ils mirent huit jours à purifier la maison de l’Éternel; le seizième jour du premier mois, ils avaient achevé. 18 Ils se rendirent ensuite chez le roi Ézéchias, et dirent: Nous avons purifié toute la maison de l’Éternel, l’autel des holocaustes et tous ses ustensiles, et la table des pains de proposition et tous ses ustensiles. 19 Nous avons remis en état et purifié tous les ustensiles que le roi Achaz avait profanés pendant son règne, lors de ses transgressions: ils sont devant l’autel de l’Éternel.
Le temple purifié et le culte rétabli
V. 20-36: cf. Lé 9. Esd 6:16-18. Mal 3:4.20 Le roi Ézéchias se leva de bon matin, assembla les chefs de la ville, et monta à la maison de l’Éternel. 21 Ils offrirent sept taureaux, sept béliers, sept agneaux et sept boucs, en sacrifice d’expiation pour le royaume, pour le sanctuaire, et pour Juda. Le roi ordonna aux sacrificateurs, fils d’Aaron, de les offrir sur l’autel de l’Éternel. 22 Les sacrificateurs égorgèrent les bœufs, et reçurent le sang, qu’ils répandirent sur l’autel; ils égorgèrent les béliers, et répandirent le sang sur l’autel; ils égorgèrent les agneaux, et répandirent le sang sur l’autel. 23 On amena ensuite les boucs expiatoires devant le roi et devant l’assemblée, qui posèrent leurs mains sur eux. 24 Les sacrificateurs les égorgèrent, et répandirent leur sang au pied de l’autel en expiation pour les péchés de tout Israël; car c’était pour tout Israël que le roi avait ordonné l’holocauste et le sacrifice d’expiation. 25 Il fit placer les Lévites dans la maison de l’Éternel avec des cymbales, des luths et des harpes, selon l’ordre de David, de Gad le voyant du roi, et de Nathan, le prophète; car c’était un ordre de l’Éternel, transmis par ses prophètes. 26 Les Lévites prirent place avec les instruments de David, et les sacrificateurs avec les trompettes. 27 Ézéchias ordonna d’offrir l’holocauste sur l’autel; et au moment où commença l’holocauste, commença aussi le chant de l’Éternel, au son des trompettes et avec accompagnement des instruments de David, roi d’Israël. 28 Toute l’assemblée se prosterna, on chanta le cantique, et l’on sonna des trompettes, le tout jusqu’à ce que l’holocauste fût achevé. 29 Et quand on eut achevé d’offrir l’holocauste, le roi et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui fléchirent le genou et se prosternèrent. 30 Puis le roi Ézéchias et les chefs dirent aux Lévites de célébrer l’Éternel avec les paroles de David et du prophète Asaph; et ils le célébrèrent avec des transports de joie, et ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent. 31 Ézéchias prit alors la parole, et dit: Maintenant que vous vous êtes consacrés à l’Éternel, approchez-vous, amenez des victimes et offrez en sacrifices d’actions de grâces à la maison de l’Éternel. Et l’assemblée amena des victimes et offrit des sacrifices d’actions de grâces, et tous ceux dont le cœur était bien disposé offrirent des holocaustes. 32 Le nombre des holocaustes offerts par l’assemblée fut de soixante-dix bœufs, cent béliers, et deux cents agneaux; toutes ces victimes furent immolées en holocauste à l’Éternel. 33 Et l’on consacra encore six cents bœufs et trois mille brebis. 34 Mais les sacrificateurs étaient en petit nombre, et ils ne purent dépouiller tous les holocaustes; leurs frères, les Lévites, les aidèrent jusqu’à ce que l’ouvrage fût fini, et jusqu’à ce que les autres sacrificateurs se fussent sanctifiés, car les Lévites avaient eu plus à cœur de se sanctifier que les sacrificateurs. 35 Il y avait d’ailleurs beaucoup d’holocaustes, avec les graisses des sacrifices d’actions de grâces, et avec les libations des holocaustes. Ainsi fut rétabli le service de la maison de l’Éternel. 36 Ézéchias et tout le peuple se réjouirent de ce que Dieu avait bien disposé le peuple, car la chose se fit subitement.
King Hezekiah of Judah
(2 Kings 18.1-3)1 Hezekiah became king of Judah at the age of twenty-five, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. 2 Following the example of his ancestor King David, he did what was pleasing to the Lord.
The Purification of the Temple
3 In the first month of the year after Hezekiah became king, he reopened the gates of the Temple and had them repaired. 4 He assembled a group of priests and Levites in the east courtyard of the Temple 5 and spoke to them there. He said, “You Levites are to consecrate yourselves and purify the Temple of the Lord, the God of your ancestors. Remove from the Temple everything that defiles it. 6 Our ancestors were unfaithful to the Lord our God and did what was displeasing to him. They abandoned him and turned their backs on the place where he dwells. 7 They closed the doors of the Temple, let the lamps go out, and failed to burn incense or offer burnt offerings in the Temple of the God of Israel. 8 Because of this the Lord has been angry with Judah and Jerusalem, and what he has done to them has shocked and frightened everyone. You know this very well. 9 Our fathers were killed in battle, and our wives and children have been taken away as prisoners.
10 “I have now decided to make a covenant with the Lord, the God of Israel, so that he will no longer be angry with us. 11 My sons, do not lose any time. You are the ones that the Lord has chosen to burn incense to him and to lead the people in worshiping him.”
12-14 The following Levites were there:
From the clan of Kohath, Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of AzariahFrom the clan of Merari, Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of JehallelelFrom the clan of Gershon, Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of JoahFrom the clan of Elizaphan, Shimri and JeuelFrom the clan of Asaph, Zechariah and MattaniahFrom the clan of Heman, Jehuel and ShimeiFrom the clan of Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel15 These men assembled their fellow Levites, and they all made themselves ritually clean. Then, as the king had commanded them to do, they began to make the Temple ritually clean, according to the Law of the Lord. 16 The priests went inside the Temple to purify it, and they carried out into the Temple courtyard everything that was ritually unclean. From there the Levites took it all outside the city to Kidron Valley.
17 The work was begun on the first day of the first month, and by the eighth day they had finished it all, including the entrance room to the Temple. Then they worked for the next eight days, until the sixteenth of the month, preparing the Temple for worship.
The Temple Is Rededicated
18 The Levites made the following report to King Hezekiah: “We have completed the ritual purification of the whole Temple, including the altar for burnt offerings, the table for the sacred bread, and all their equipment. 19 We have also brought back all the equipment which King Ahaz took away during those years he was unfaithful to God, and we have rededicated it. It is all in front of the Lord's altar.”
20 Without delay King Hezekiah assembled the leading men of the city, and together they went to the Temple. 21 As an offering to take away the sins of the royal family and of the people of Judah and to purify the Temple, they took seven bulls, seven sheep, seven lambs, and seven goats. The king told the priests, who were descendants of Aaron, to offer the animals as sacrifices on the altar. 22 The priests killed the bulls first, then the sheep, and then the lambs, and sprinkled the blood of each sacrifice on the altar. 23 Finally they took the goats to the king and to the other worshipers, who laid their hands on them. 24 Then the priests killed the goats and poured their blood on the altar as a sacrifice to take away the sin of all the people, for the king had commanded that burnt offerings and sin offerings be made for all Israel.
25 The king followed the instructions that the Lord had given to King David through Gad, the king's prophet, and through the prophet Nathan; he stationed Levites in the Temple, with harps and cymbals, 26 instruments like those that King David had used. The priests also stood there with trumpets. 27 Hezekiah gave the order for the burnt offering to be presented; and as the offering began, the people sang praise to the Lord, and the musicians began to play the trumpets and all the other instruments. 28 Everyone who was there joined in worship, and the singing and the rest of the music continued until all the sacrifices had been burned. 29 Then King Hezekiah and all the people knelt down and worshiped God. 30 The king and the leaders of the nation told the Levites to sing to the Lord the songs of praise that were written by David and by Asaph the prophet. So everyone sang with great joy as they knelt and worshiped God.
31 Hezekiah said to the people, “Now that you are ritually clean, bring sacrifices as offerings of thanksgiving to the Lord.” They obeyed, and some of them also voluntarily brought animals to be sacrificed as burnt offerings. 32 They brought 70 bulls, 100 sheep, and 200 lambs as burnt offerings for the Lord; 33 they also brought 600 bulls and 3,000 sheep as sacrifices for the people to eat. 34 Since there were not enough priests to kill all these animals, the Levites helped them until the work was finished. By then more priests had made themselves ritually clean. (The Levites were more faithful in keeping ritually clean than the priests were.) 35 In addition to offering the sacrifices that were burned whole, the priests were responsible for burning the fat that was offered from the sacrifices which the people ate, and for pouring out the wine that was presented with the burnt offerings.
And so worship in the Temple was begun again. 36 King Hezekiah and the people were happy, because God had helped them to do all this so quickly.
