Jotham, roi de Juda
V. 1-9: cf. 2 R 15:32-38. Pr 21:29. 3 Jn 12.1 Jotham avait vingt-cinq ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna seize ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Jeruscha, fille de Tsadok. 2 Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l’Éternel, entièrement comme avait fait Ozias, son père. Seulement, il n’entra point dans le temple de l’Éternel. Toutefois, le peuple se corrompait encore. 3 Jotham bâtit la porte supérieure de la maison de l’Éternel, et il fit beaucoup de constructions sur les murs de la colline. 4 Il bâtit des villes dans la montagne de Juda, et des châteaux et des tours dans les bois. 5 Il fut en guerre avec le roi des fils d’Ammon, et il l’emporta sur eux. Les fils d’Ammon lui donnèrent cette année-là cent talents d’argent, dix mille cors de froment, et dix mille d’orge; et ils lui en payèrent autant la seconde année et la troisième. 6 Jotham devint puissant, parce qu’il affermit ses voies devant l’Éternel, son Dieu. 7 Le reste des actions de Jotham, toutes ses guerres, et tout ce qu’il a fait, cela est écrit dans le livre des rois d’Israël et de Juda. 8 Il avait vingt-cinq ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna seize ans à Jérusalem. 9 Jotham se coucha avec ses pères, et on l’enterra dans la ville de David. Et Achaz, son fils, régna à sa place.
King Jotham of Judah
(2 Kings 15.32-38)1 Jotham became king at the age of twenty-five, and he ruled in Jerusalem for sixteen years. His mother was Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok. 2 He did what was pleasing to the Lord, just as his father had done; but unlike his father he did not sin by burning incense in the Temple. The people, however, went on sinning.
3 It was Jotham who built the North Gate of the Temple and did extensive work on the city wall in the area of Jerusalem called Ophel. 4 In the mountains of Judah he built cities, and in the forests he built forts and towers. 5 He fought against the king of Ammon and his army and defeated them. Then he forced the Ammonites to pay him the following tribute each year for three years: four tons of silver, fifty thousand bushels of wheat, and fifty thousand bushels of barley. 6 Jotham grew powerful because he faithfully obeyed the Lord his God. 7 The other events of Jotham's reign, his wars, and his policies, are all recorded in The History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. 8 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he ruled in Jerusalem for sixteen years. 9 He died and was buried in David's City and his son Ahaz succeeded him as king.
