L’arche à Kirjath-Jearim
V. 1-6: cf. Joë 2:12-18. Jg 10:15, Jg 16. Ca 2:12, Ca 13. Éz 37:1-14.1 Les gens de Kirjath-Jearim vinrent, et firent monter l’arche de l’Éternel; ils la conduisirent dans la maison d’Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Éléazar pour garder l’arche de l’Éternel. 2 Il s’était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l’arche avait été déposée à Kirjath-Jearim. Vingt années s’étaient écoulées. Alors toute la maison d’Israël poussa des gémissements vers l’Éternel. 3 Samuel dit à toute la maison d’Israël: Si c’est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l’Éternel, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre cœur vers l’Éternel, et servez-le lui seul; et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins. 4 Et les enfants d’Israël ôtèrent du milieu d’eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent l’Éternel seul. 5 Samuel dit: Assemblez tout Israël à Mitspa, et je prierai l’Éternel pour vous. 6 Et ils s’assemblèrent à Mitspa. Ils puisèrent de l’eau et la répandirent devant l’Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, en disant: Nous avons péché contre l’Éternel! Samuel jugea les enfants d’Israël à Mitspa.
Israël repentant, et les Philistins vaincus
V. 7-14: cf. (Ps 99:6. Jg 2:16, 18.) Ps 118:10-16. Hé 11:32-34.7 Les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d’Israël s’étaient assemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent contre Israël. A cette nouvelle, les enfants d’Israël eurent peur des Philistins, 8 et ils dirent à Samuel: Ne cesse point de crier pour nous à l’Éternel, notre Dieu, afin qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins. 9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et l’offrit tout entier en holocauste à l’Éternel. Il cria à l’Éternel pour Israël, et l’Éternel l’exauça. 10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l’holocauste, les Philistins s’approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L’Éternel fit retentir en ce jour son tonnerre sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël. 11 Les hommes d’Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins, et les battirent jusqu’au-dessous de Beth-Car. 12 Samuel prit une pierre, qu’il plaça entre Mitspa et Schen, et il l’appela du nom d’Ében-Ézer, en disant: Jusqu’ici l’Éternel nous a secourus. 13 Ainsi les Philistins furent humiliés, et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d’Israël. La main de l’Éternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel. 14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ékron jusqu’à Gath, avec leur territoire; Israël les arracha de la main des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.
V. 15-17: cf. 1 S 12:1-5.15 Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie. 16 Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans tous ces lieux. 17 Puis il revenait à Rama, où était sa maison; et là il jugeait Israël, et il y bâtit un autel à l’Éternel.
1 So the people of Kiriath Jearim got the Lord's Covenant Box and took it to the house of a man named Abinadab, who lived on a hill. They consecrated his son Eleazar to be in charge of it.
Samuel Rules Israel
2 The Covenant Box of the Lord stayed in Kiriath Jearim a long time, some twenty years. During this time all the Israelites cried to the Lord for help.
3 Samuel said to the people of Israel, “If you are going to turn to the Lord with all your hearts, you must get rid of all the foreign gods and the images of the goddess Astarte. Dedicate yourselves completely to the Lord and worship only him, and he will rescue you from the power of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites got rid of their idols of Baal and Astarte, and worshiped only the Lord.
5 Then Samuel called for all the Israelites to meet at Mizpah, telling them, “I will pray to the Lord for you there.” 6 So they all gathered at Mizpah. They drew some water and poured it out as an offering to the Lord and fasted that whole day. They said, “We have sinned against the Lord.” (It was at Mizpah where Samuel settled disputes among the Israelites.)
7 When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, the five Philistine kings started out with their men to attack them. The Israelites heard about it and were afraid, 8 and said to Samuel, “Keep praying to the Lord our God to save us from the Philistines.” 9 Samuel killed a young lamb and burned it whole as a sacrifice to the Lord. Then he prayed to the Lord to help Israel, and the Lord answered his prayer. 10 While Samuel was offering the sacrifice, the Philistines moved forward to attack; but just then the Lord thundered from heaven against them. They became completely confused and fled in panic. 11 The Israelites marched out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines almost as far as Bethcar, killing them along the way.
12 Then Samuel took a stone, set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and said, “The Lord has helped us all the way”—and he named it “Stone of Help.” 13 So the Philistines were defeated, and the Lord prevented them from invading Israel's territory as long as Samuel lived. 14 All the cities which the Philistines had captured between Ekron and Gath were returned to Israel, and so Israel got back all its territory. And there was peace also between the Israelites and the Canaanites.
15 Samuel ruled Israel as long as he lived. 16 Every year he would go around to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and in these places he would settle disputes. 17 Then he would go back to his home in Ramah, where also he would serve as judge. In Ramah he built an altar to the Lord.
