Guerre avec les Amalécites
V. 1-9: cf. (Ex 17:8-16. De 25:17-19.) Ps 94:1-3. Jé 48:10.1 Samuel dit à Saül: C’est moi que l’Éternel a envoyé pour t’oindre roi sur son peuple, sur Israël: écoute donc ce que dit l’Éternel. 2 Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées: Je me souviens de ce qu’Amalek fit à Israël, lorsqu’il lui ferma le chemin à sa sortie d’Égypte. 3 Va maintenant, frappe Amalek, et dévouez par interdit tout ce qui lui appartient; tu ne l’épargneras point, et tu feras mourir hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, bœufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes. 4 Saül convoqua le peuple, et en fit la revue à Thelaïm: il y avait deux cent mille hommes de pied, et dix mille hommes de Juda. 5 Saül marcha jusqu’à la ville d’Amalek, et mit une embuscade dans la vallée. 6 Il dit aux Kéniens: Allez, retirez-vous, sortez du milieu d’Amalek, afin que je ne vous fasse pas périr avec lui; car vous avez eu de la bonté pour tous les enfants d’Israël, lorsqu’ils montèrent d’Égypte. Et les Kéniens se retirèrent du milieu d’Amalek. 7 Saül battit Amalek depuis Havila jusqu’à Schur, qui est en face de l’Égypte. 8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi d’Amalek, et il dévoua par interdit tout le peuple en le passant au fil de l’épée. 9 Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs bœufs, les meilleures bêtes de la seconde portée, les agneaux gras, et tout ce qu’il y avait de bon; ils ne voulurent pas le dévouer par interdit, et ils dévouèrent seulement tout ce qui était méprisable et chétif.
Désobéissance de Saül
V. 10-35: cf. (Pr 21:3. 1 S 2:30.) Ps 73:27. És 28:20. Lu 14:34, Lu 35.10 L’Éternel adressa la parole à Samuel, et lui dit: 11 Je me repens d’avoir établi Saül pour roi, car il se détourne de moi et il n’observe point mes paroles. Samuel fut irrité, et il cria à l’Éternel toute la nuit. 12 Il se leva de bon matin, pour aller au-devant de Saül. Et on vint lui dire: Saül est allé à Carmel, et voici, il s’est érigé un monument; puis il s’en est retourné, et, passant plus loin, il est descendu à Guilgal. 13 Samuel se rendit auprès de Saül, et Saül lui dit: Sois béni de l’Éternel! J’ai observé la parole de l’Éternel. 14 Samuel dit: Qu’est-ce donc que ce bêlement de brebis qui parvient à mes oreilles, et ce mugissement de bœufs que j’entends? 15 Saül répondit: Ils les ont amenés de chez les Amalécites, parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs bœufs, afin de les sacrifier à l’Éternel, ton Dieu; et le reste, nous l’avons dévoué par interdit. 16 Samuel dit à Saül: Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l’Éternel m’a dit cette nuit. Et Saül lui dit: Parle! 17 Samuel dit: Lorsque tu étais petit à tes yeux, n’es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d’Israël, et l’Éternel ne t’a-t-il pas oint pour que tu sois roi sur Israël? 18 L’Éternel t’avait fait partir, en disant: Va, et dévoue par interdit ces pécheurs, les Amalécites; tu leur feras la guerre jusqu’à ce que tu les aies exterminés. 19 Pourquoi n’as-tu pas écouté la voix de l’Éternel? Pourquoi t’es-tu jeté sur le butin, et as-tu fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel? 20 Saül répondit à Samuel: J’ai bien écouté la voix de l’Éternel, et j’ai suivi le chemin par lequel m’envoyait l’Éternel. J’ai amené Agag, roi d’Amalek, et j’ai dévoué par interdit les Amalécites; 21 mais le peuple a pris sur le butin des brebis et des bœufs, comme prémices de ce qui devait être dévoué, afin de les sacrifier à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal. 22 Samuel dit: L’Éternel trouve-t-il du plaisir dans les holocaustes et les sacrifices, comme dans l’obéissance à la voix de l’Éternel? Voici, l’obéissance vaut mieux que les sacrifices, et l’observation de sa parole vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers. 23 Car la désobéissance est aussi coupable que la divination, et la résistance ne l’est pas moins que l’idolâtrie et les théraphim. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l’Éternel, il te rejette aussi comme roi. 24 Alors Saül dit à Samuel: J’ai péché, car j’ai transgressé l’ordre de l’Éternel, et je n’ai pas obéi à tes paroles; je craignais le peuple, et j’ai écouté sa voix. 25 Maintenant, je te prie, pardonne mon péché, reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l’Éternel. 26 Samuel dit à Saül: Je ne retournerai point avec toi; car tu as rejeté la parole de l’Éternel, et l’Éternel te rejette, afin que tu ne sois plus roi sur Israël. 27 Et comme Samuel se tournait pour s’en aller, Saül le saisit par le pan de son manteau, qui se déchira. 28 Samuel lui dit: L’Éternel déchire aujourd’hui de dessus toi la royauté d’Israël, et il la donne à un autre, qui est meilleur que toi. 29 Celui qui est la force d’Israël ne ment point et ne se repent point, car il n’est pas un homme pour se repentir. 30 Saül dit encore: J’ai péché! Maintenant, je te prie, honore-moi en présence des anciens de mon peuple et en présence d’Israël; reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l’Éternel, ton Dieu. 31 Samuel retourna et suivit Saül, et Saül se prosterna devant l’Éternel. 32 Puis Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d’Amalek. Et Agag s’avança vers lui d’un air joyeux; il disait: Certainement, l’amertume de la mort est passée. 33 Samuel dit: De même que ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, ainsi ta mère entre les femmes sera privée d’un fils. Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l’Éternel, à Guilgal. 34 Samuel partit pour Rama, et Saül monta dans sa maison à Guibea de Saül. 35 Samuel n’alla plus voir Saül jusqu’au jour de sa mort; car Samuel pleurait sur Saül, parce que l’Éternel se repentait d’avoir établi Saül roi d’Israël.
War against the Amalekites
1 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one whom the Lord sent to anoint you king of his people Israel. Now listen to what the Lord Almighty says. 2 He is going to punish the people of Amalek because their ancestors opposed the Israelites when they were coming from Egypt. 3 Go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Don't leave a thing; kill all the men, women, children, and babies; the cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys.”
4 Saul called his forces together and inspected them at Telem: there were 200,000 soldiers from Israel and 10,000 from Judah. 5 Then he and his men went to the city of Amalek and waited in ambush in a dry riverbed. 6 He sent a warning to the Kenites, a people whose ancestors had been kind to the Israelites when they came from Egypt: “Go away and leave the Amalekites, so that I won't kill you along with them.” So the Kenites left.
7 Saul defeated the Amalekites, fighting all the way from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt; 8 he captured King Agag of Amalek alive and killed all the people. 9 But Saul and his men spared Agag's life and did not kill the best sheep and cattle, the best calves and lambs, or anything else that was good; they destroyed only what was useless or worthless.
Saul Is Rejected as King
10 The Lord said to Samuel, 11 “I am sorry that I made Saul king; he has turned away from me and disobeyed my commands.” Samuel was angry, and all night long he pleaded with the Lord. 12 Early the following morning he went off to find Saul. He heard that Saul had gone to the town of Carmel, where he had built a monument to himself, and then had gone on to Gilgal. 13 Samuel went up to Saul, who greeted him, saying, “The Lord bless you, Samuel! I have obeyed the Lord's command.”
14 Samuel asked, “Why, then, do I hear cattle mooing and sheep bleating?”
15 Saul answered, “My men took them from the Amalekites. They kept the best sheep and cattle to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have destroyed completely.”
16 “Stop,” Samuel ordered, “and I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul said.
17 Samuel answered, “Even though you consider yourself of no importance, you are the leader of the tribes of Israel. The Lord anointed you king of Israel, 18 and he sent you out with orders to destroy those wicked people of Amalek. He told you to fight until you had killed them all. 19 Why, then, did you not obey him? Why did you rush to grab the loot, and so do what displeases the Lord?”
20 “I did obey the Lord,” Saul replied. “I went out as he told me to, brought back King Agag, and killed all the Amalekites. 21 But my men did not kill the best sheep and cattle that they captured; instead, they brought them here to Gilgal to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God.”
22 Samuel said, “Which does the Lord prefer: obedience or offerings and sacrifices? It is better to obey him than to sacrifice the best sheep to him. 23 Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the Lord's command, he has rejected you as king.”
24 “Yes, I have sinned,” Saul replied. “I disobeyed the Lord's command and your instructions. I was afraid of my men and did what they wanted. 25 But now I beg you, forgive my sin and go back with me, so that I can worship the Lord.”
26 “I will not go back with you,” Samuel answered. “You rejected the Lord's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel.”
27 Then Samuel turned to leave, but Saul caught hold of his cloak, and it tore. 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today and given it to someone who is a better man than you. 29 Israel's majestic God does not lie or change his mind. He is not a human being—he does not change his mind.”
30 “I have sinned,” Saul replied. “But at least show me respect in front of the leaders of my people and all of Israel. Go back with me so that I can worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with him, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 “Bring King Agag here to me,” Samuel ordered. Agag came to him, trembling with fear, thinking to himself, “What a bitter thing it is to die!” 33 Samuel said, “As your sword has made many mothers childless, so now your mother will become childless.” And he cut Agag to pieces in front of the altar in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and King Saul went home to Gibeah. 35 As long as Samuel lived, he never again saw the king; but he grieved over him. The Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king of Israel.
