Saül vainqueur des Ammonites
V. 1-11: cf. (Jg 11. 1 S 31:11-13.) 1 S 10:7.1 Nachasch, l’Ammonite, vint assiéger Jabès en Galaad. Tous les habitants de Jabès dirent à Nachasch: Traite alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons. 2 Mais Nachasch, l’Ammonite, leur répondit: Je traiterai avec vous à la condition que je vous crève à tous l’œil droit, et que j’imprime ainsi un opprobre sur tout Israël. 3 Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent: Accorde-nous une trêve de sept jours, afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël; et s’il n’y a personne qui nous secoure, nous nous rendrons à toi. 4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibea de Saül, et dirent ces choses aux oreilles du peuple. Et tout le peuple éleva la voix, et pleura. 5 Et voici, Saül revenait des champs, derrière ses bœufs, et il dit: Qu’a donc le peuple pour pleurer? On lui raconta ce qu’avaient dit ceux de Jabès. 6 Dès que Saül eut entendu ces choses, il fut saisi par l’esprit de Dieu, et sa colère s’enflamma fortement. 7 Il prit une paire de bœufs, et les coupa en morceaux, qu’il envoya par les messagers dans tout le territoire d’Israël, en disant: Quiconque ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, aura ses bœufs traités de la même manière. La terreur de l’Éternel s’empara du peuple, qui se mit en marche comme un seul homme. 8 Saül en fit la revue à Bézek; les enfants d’Israël étaient trois cent mille, et les hommes de Juda trente mille. 9 Ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: Vous parlerez ainsi aux habitants de Jabès en Galaad: Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera dans sa chaleur. Les messagers portèrent cette nouvelle à ceux de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie; 10 et qui dirent aux Ammonites: Demain nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous traiterez comme bon vous semblera. 11 Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en trois corps. Ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites à la veille du matin, et ils les battirent jusqu’à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent furent dispersés, et il n’en resta pas deux ensemble.

Livrez ces gens, et nous les ferons mourir. 13 Mais Saül dit: Personne ne sera mis à mort en ce jour, car aujourd’hui l’Éternel a opéré une délivrance en Israël. 14 Et Samuel dit au peuple: Venez, et allons à Guilgal, pour y confirmer la royauté. 15 Tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal, et ils établirent Saül pour roi, devant l’Éternel, à Guilgal. Là, ils offrirent des sacrifices d’actions de grâces devant l’Éternel; et là, Saül et tous les hommes d’Israël se livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.
Saul Defeats the Ammonites
1 About a month later King Nahash of Ammon led his army against the town of Jabesh in the territory of Gilead and besieged it. The men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will accept you as our ruler.”
2 Nahash answered, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition: I will put out everyone's right eye and so bring disgrace on all Israel.”
3 The leaders of Jabesh said, “Give us seven days to send messengers throughout the land of Israel. If no one will help us, then we will surrender to you.”
4 The messengers arrived at Gibeah, where Saul lived, and when they told the news, the people started crying in despair. 5 Saul was just then coming in from the field with his oxen, and he asked, “What's wrong? Why is everyone crying?” They told him what the messengers from Jabesh had reported. 6 When Saul heard this, the spirit of God took control of him, and he became furious. 7 He took two oxen, cut them in pieces, and had messengers carry the pieces throughout the land of Israel with this warning: “Whoever does not follow Saul and Samuel into battle will have this done to his oxen!”
The people of Israel were afraid of what the Lord might do, and all of them, without exception, came out together. 8 Saul gathered them at Bezek: there were 300,000 from Israel and 30,000 from Judah. 9 They said to the messengers from Jabesh, “Tell your people that before noon tomorrow they will be rescued.” When the people of Jabesh received the message, they were overjoyed 10 and said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do with us whatever you wish.”
11 That night Saul divided his men into three groups, and at dawn the next day they rushed into the enemy camp and attacked the Ammonites. By noon they had slaughtered them. The survivors scattered, each man running off by himself.
12 Then the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Where are the people who said that Saul should not be our king? Hand them over to us, and we will kill them!”
13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today, for this is the day the Lord rescued Israel.” 14 And Samuel said to them, “Let us all go to Gilgal and once more proclaim Saul as our king.” 15 So they all went to Gilgal, and there at the holy place they proclaimed Saul king. They offered fellowship sacrifices, and Saul and all the people of Israel celebrated the event.
