Sacrifices for Sin
(Leviticus 6.24-30)1 The Lord told Moses 2 to say to the community of Israel:
Offer a sacrifice to ask forgiveness when you sin by accidentally doing something I have told you not to do.
When the High Priest Sins
The Lord said:
3 When the high priest sins, he makes everyone else guilty too. And so, he must sacrifice a young bull that has nothing wrong with it. 4 The priest will lead the bull to the entrance of the sacred tent, lay his hand on its head, and kill it there. 5 He will take a bowl of the blood inside the tent, 6 dip a finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times toward the sacred chest behind the curtain. 7 Then, in my presence, he will smear some of the blood on each of the four corners of the incense altar, before pouring out the rest at the foot of the bronze altar near the entrance to the tent.
8-10 The priest will remove the fat from the bull, just as he does when he sacrifices a bull to ask my blessing. This includes the fat on the insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat. He will then send it all up in smoke.
11-12 The skin and flesh of the bull, together with its legs, insides, and the food still in its stomach, are to be taken outside the camp and burned on a wood fire near the ash heap.
When the Whole Nation Sins
The Lord said:
13 When the nation of Israel disobeys me without meaning to, the whole nation is still guilty. 14 Once you realize what has happened, you must sacrifice a young bull to ask my forgiveness. Lead the bull to the entrance of the sacred tent, 15 where your tribal leaders will lay their hands on its head, before having it killed in my presence.
16 The priest will take a bowl of the animal's blood inside the sacred tent, 17 dip a finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of it seven times toward the sacred chest behind the curtain. 18 Then, in my presence, he must smear some of the blood on each of the four corners of the incense altar, before pouring out the rest at the foot of the bronze altar near the entrance to the tent. 19-21 After this, the priest will remove the fat from the bull and send it up in smoke on the altar. Finally, he will burn its remains outside the camp, just as he did with the other bull. By this sacrifice the sin of the whole nation will be forgiven.
When a Tribal Leader Sins
The Lord God said:
22 Any tribal leader who disobeys me without knowing it is still guilty. 23 As soon as the leader realizes what has happened, he must sacrifice a goat that has nothing wrong with it. 24 This is a sacrifice for sin. So he will lay his hand on the animal's head, before having it killed in my presence at the north side of the bronze altar. 25 The priest will dip a finger in the blood, smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar, and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 26 Then he must send all of the fat up in smoke, just as he does when a sacrifice is offered to ask my blessing. By this sacrifice the leader's sin will be forgiven.
When Ordinary People Sin
The Lord said:
27 When any of you ordinary people disobey me without meaning to, you are still guilty. 28 As soon as you realize what you have done, you must sacrifice a female goat that has nothing wrong with it. 29 Lead the goat to the north side of the bronze altar and lay your hand on its head, before having it killed. 30 Then a priest will dip a finger in the blood; he will smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 31 After this, the priest will remove all of the fat, just as he does when an animal is sacrificed to ask my blessing. The priest will then send the fat up in smoke with a smell that pleases me. This animal is sacrificed so that I will forgive you ordinary people when you sin.
32 If you offer a lamb instead of a goat as a sacrifice for sin, it must be a female that has nothing wrong with it. 33 Lead the lamb to the altar and lay your hand on its head, before having it killed. 34 The priest will dip a finger in the blood, smear some of it on each of the four corners of the altar, and pour out the rest at the foot of the altar. 35 After this, all of the fat must be removed, just as when an animal is sacrificed to ask my blessing. Then the priest will send it up in smoke to me, together with a food offering, and your sin will be forgiven.
Les sacrifices d’expiation

Lé 16:3, 11-14.1 L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit: 2 Parle aux enfants d’Israël, et dis: Lorsque quelqu’un péchera involontairement contre l’un des commandements de l’Éternel, en faisant des choses qui ne doivent point se faire; 3 Si c’est le sacrificateur ayant reçu l’onction qui a péché et a rendu par là le peuple coupable, il offrira à l’Éternel, pour le péché qu’il a commis, un jeune taureau sans défaut, en sacrifice d’expiation. 4 Il amènera le taureau à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation, devant l’Éternel; et il posera sa main sur la tête du taureau, qu’il égorgera devant l’Éternel. 5 Le sacrificateur ayant reçu l’onction prendra du sang du taureau, et l’apportera dans la tente d’assignation; 6 il trempera son doigt dans le sang, et il en fera sept fois l’aspersion devant l’Éternel, en face du voile du sanctuaire. 7 Le sacrificateur mettra du sang sur les cornes de l’autel des parfums odoriférants, qui est devant l’Éternel dans la tente d’assignation; et il répandra tout le sang du taureau au pied de l’autel des holocaustes, qui est à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. 8 Il enlèvera toute la graisse du taureau expiatoire, la graisse qui couvre les entrailles et toute celle qui y est attachée, 9 les deux rognons, et la graisse qui les entoure, qui couvre les flancs, et le grand lobe du foie, qu’il détachera près des rognons. 10 Le sacrificateur enlèvera ces parties comme on les enlève du taureau dans le sacrifice d’actions de grâces, et il les brûlera sur l’autel des holocaustes. 11 Mais la peau du taureau, toute sa chair, avec sa tête, ses jambes, ses entrailles et ses excréments, 12 le taureau entier, il l’emportera hors du camp, dans un lieu pur, où l’on jette les cendres, et il le brûlera au feu sur du bois: c’est sur le tas de cendres qu’il sera brûlé.

No 15:22-26. 2 Ch 29:20-24.13 Si c’est toute l’assemblée d’Israël qui a péché involontairement et sans s’en apercevoir, en faisant contre l’un des commandements de l’Éternel des choses qui ne doivent point se faire et en se rendant ainsi coupable, 14 et que le péché qu’on a commis vienne à être découvert, l’assemblée offrira un jeune taureau en sacrifice d’expiation, et on l’amènera devant la tente d’assignation. 15 Les anciens d’Israël poseront leurs mains sur la tête du taureau devant l’Éternel, et on égorgera le taureau devant l’Éternel. 16 Le sacrificateur ayant reçu l’onction apportera du sang du taureau dans la tente d’assignation; 17 il trempera son doigt dans le sang, et il en fera sept fois l’aspersion devant l’Éternel, en face du voile. 18 Il mettra du sang sur les cornes de l’autel qui est devant l’Éternel dans la tente d’assignation; et il répandra tout le sang au pied de l’autel des holocaustes, qui est à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. 19 Il enlèvera toute la graisse du taureau, et il la brûlera sur l’autel. 20 Il fera de ce taureau comme du taureau expiatoire; il fera de même. C’est ainsi que le sacrificateur fera pour eux l’expiation, et il leur sera pardonné. 21 Il emportera le taureau hors du camp, et il le brûlera comme le premier taureau. C’est un sacrifice d’expiation pour l’assemblée.
V. 22-35: cf. No 15:27-31. Lé 5:1-13.22 Si c’est un chef qui a péché, en faisant involontairement contre l’un des commandements de l’Éternel, son Dieu, des choses qui ne doivent point se faire et en se rendant ainsi coupable, 23 et qu’il vienne à découvrir le péché qu’il a commis, il offrira en sacrifice un bouc mâle sans défaut. 24 Il posera sa main sur la tête du bouc, qu’il égorgera dans le lieu où l’on égorge les holocaustes devant l’Éternel. C’est un sacrifice d’expiation. 25 Le sacrificateur prendra avec son doigt du sang de la victime expiatoire, il en mettra sur les cornes de l’autel des holocaustes, et il répandra le sang au pied de l’autel des holocaustes. 26 Il brûlera toute la graisse sur l’autel, comme la graisse du sacrifice d’actions de grâces. C’est ainsi que le sacrificateur fera pour ce chef l’expiation de son péché, et il lui sera pardonné. 27 Si c’est quelqu’un du peuple qui a péché involontairement, en faisant contre l’un des commandements de l’Éternel des choses qui ne doivent point se faire et en se rendant ainsi coupable, 28 et qu’il vienne à découvrir le péché qu’il a commis, il offrira en sacrifice une chèvre, une femelle sans défaut, pour le péché qu’il a commis. 29 Il posera sa main sur la tête de la victime expiatoire, qu’il égorgera dans le lieu où l’on égorge les holocaustes. 30 Le sacrificateur prendra avec son doigt du sang de la victime, il en mettra sur les cornes de l’autel des holocaustes, et il répandra tout le sang au pied de l’autel. 31 Le sacrificateur ôtera toute la graisse, comme on ôte la graisse du sacrifice d’actions de grâces, et il la brûlera sur l’autel, et elle sera d’une agréable odeur à l’Éternel. C’est ainsi que le sacrificateur fera pour cet homme l’expiation, et il lui sera pardonné. 32 S’il offre un agneau en sacrifice d’expiation, il offrira une femelle sans défaut. 33 Il posera sa main sur la tête de la victime, qu’il égorgera en sacrifice d’expiation dans le lieu où l’on égorge les holocaustes. 34 Le sacrificateur prendra avec son doigt du sang de la victime, il en mettra sur les cornes de l’autel des holocaustes, et il répandra tout le sang au pied de l’autel. 35 Le sacrificateur ôtera toute la graisse, comme on ôte la graisse de l’agneau dans le sacrifice d’actions de grâces, et il la brûlera sur l’autel, comme un sacrifice consumé par le feu devant l’Éternel. C’est ainsi que le sacrificateur fera pour cet homme l’expiation du péché qu’il a commis, et il lui sera pardonné.
